Have you tried daydreaming/visualisation? It doesn't keep you aware by itself, but it helps the dreambuilding process so you'll enter the dream faster. I use visualisation in DEILD, while being passively aware of my breathing. It feels as every slow exhale takes me closer to the visualised dream

As DEILD is a fast method, visualisation makes it even faster. You won't need to stay aware for more than a couple of minutes at most, sometimes it only takes seconds
