Your mind wasn't empty enough. You were still waiting for something to happen. You literally need to just fall asleep. But if it's too difficult to keep an anchor and still fall asleep like normal, then I would suggest the DEILD method. It's very similar, except you do it immediately after waking. With DEILD, you're automatically 90% of the way there, so it's easier to get back to sleep. The catch with DEILD is that you need to have the presence of mind to remember to not move a muscle upon waking. This is in contrast with WILD, which allows movement if it facilitates falling asleep.
