I actually got bored in this LD

Today was very very strange. One of the most intense lucid experiences I've ever had. I went to sleep without any induction, barely any dream recall. And bam, I had a lucid dream. Only thing was... I couldn't wake up after a while. It started as a nightmare, some scary things happened, but then it turned into a normal lucid dream.

It lasted for like... at least 2 hours. I did everything I could think of. After a while, I was freaking out because I couldn't wake up. Just false awakening after false awakening.

OH, and I finally touched a mirror. I remember people on this forum talking about touching mirrors in lucid dreams, and it freakin hurt. It felt like an electric shock. Oww.

Well not a single dream can last that long in real time or I seriously doubt it. But congrats still, long LD are always worth of praise.

Strange how people become bored in LDs. Maybe I am just too creative ^^ but in case you want to wake up, you better train yourself to wake up in the dream. Good skill to know too
Jujutsu is the gentle art. It's the art where a small man is going to prove to you, no matter how strong you are, no matter how mad you get, that you're going to have to accept defeat. That's what jujutsu is.

I have had the same thing happen

Lvlindless I am soooo hearing you about not being able to wake up and being stuck in a dream for hours on end. Before I talk about it I'll just mention that I also had the same electric shock sensation when I touched a mirror in a dream about a week ago. An excerpt from my Dream Journal...

I can feel that my arm has gone right through the wall behind the mirror and into the bedroom of the next apartment. I can feel the bedpost of the neighbors’ bed. I go to put my head through to look but I wake up.
I also know what you mean about having trouble waking up and the LD going on for hours. This started happening to me back when I was a teenager when I first discovered lucid dreaming but didn't know what it was. A friend had told me a technique that would make my dreams longer and more vivid. I started doing the technique to see what happened and it ended up way out of control so I stopped. My dreaming got so out of hand that I began to have difficulty distinguishing between real life and dreams. I would just go on and on and on having FAs for hours on end. Sometimes I would have around 20 FAs and when I would finally wake up it would be early in the afternoon. I'm not kidding. It's like my brain had gone into some sort of REM loop that it couldn't get out of.

I once had it so bad that I just couldn't wake up no matter what I did. I eventually started to wonder if I had actually died in my sleep and that was why I couldn't "wake up", because I was dead and now in the afterlife. I remember I sat down on a couch and cried. I was really distraught. I couldn't think of any other reason why I couldn't wake up. After that the whole LD thing got pretty much out of control and so I decided to stop. I felt like I might go insane.

This morning I had solid REM for two and a half hours after a WBTB with FAs. It's all very taxing but now I know that the practise is safe I find it fun!

Your dreams can really alter time, it seems. Or rather, your mind can. There are situations when people have done tests that when you have an adrenaline rush your body slows down time, and you percieve everything faster. It's really quite interesting. I think the same concept could be used in LD; if you need to, you can slow down time. Well, I hope this helps explain that a little.

Wow! I would love to do that sometime. The most fas that i had were 4, but instead of sleeping til the afternoon, i'd rather wake up at 5:30 am. You must sleep very well.

Why the heck is that? I remember reading topics about mirrors in dreams on here a while ago. Alot of people said they felt some sort of burn or tingle when they did. AND, the scene in the Matrix where he touches the mirror comes back to me right now. What the heck is with mirrors in dreams?

And the same thing happened in the dream I had. I kept having FA after FA, like... literally 15 - 20. I started thinking I might be dead or in a coma or something. It was pretty scary. And I felt totally stuck in the dream, like... no way I'm waking up now.

I don't know what the deal is with the mirrors but it's weird alright.

As for the not being able to wake up, it's interesting that you had the same thought that I had when it happened to me, ie that you could be dead in RL. I didn't think about the possibility of a coma. Yikes! Yeah, it was very scary. I remember feeling completely trapped in the dreamworld I was in.

But now I love FAs and I would love to be unable to wake up because that would mean my dream was super stable!

Would you mind sharing with me the technique your friend told you about having long/vivid dreams? In a private message, perhaps?

      The technique

Sure thing! From my Dream Journal, Tips & Pointers:

Improving Dream Recall, Quantity and Vividness

My other tip is a technique I learned many years ago that when you make the effort to do should significantly increase the length and vividness of your dreams thus making them easier to recall and also giving you more opportunity to become lucid The technique is as follows:

When you wake up in the morning from a dream try to keep still and keep your eyes closed and consciously carry on the dream as if you hadn't woken up. Just make up what happens next in your head, but try to make it suited to the general mood and feeling of the dream you had been in. Do this for as long as you can. The longer you do it for the better. It is quite boring to do but the pay-off is that the next night you will find that your dreams will be longer and more real/vivid. The effect seems to become more pronounced with each passing night provided you make the effort to do this mental activity when you wake up each morning. I usually do it for 5-10 minutes if I can.

For some reason it is really rather boring doing the 'dream continuation' part of this. I think because when people wake up in the morning they automatically want to think about the day ahead, but if you make the effort it does seem to work very well. Once you have done it, get up and write your actual dream down in your dream journal (excluding the part you made up after waking).

Good luck! It certainly works for me.

Thanks! This tech sounds like some sort of physical excercise, i.e. with dumbbells - not neccessarily fun but probably useful. Seems like it trains brain to do.. do something . I will try this!

You're welcome. I hope it makes a difference. It definitely affected my dreaming all those years ago however of course it may have simply been the fact that I was suddenly thinking about my dreams and recalling them which caused the effect. I don't know really. I just know that I'll do anything and everything to have a LD!

I never seem to run across mirrors in my dreams (and haven't had enough LDs to look for one). I took a few literature classes, and one thing we talked about is how mirrors actually show you what other people see when they look at you. My perception of myself is different than what I see in a mirror and probably even more of how other people see me in total. A lot of people, when they see a mirror in their dreams, see themselves distorted or just see something completely different. Some use mirrors as portals, others attempt to pull something or someone out through the mirror.

For some reason they just do different things to different people

Finally! Someone else who has done this! I did this when I was younger, primarily after a particularly interesting dream that didn't finish. I'd lay there and try to finish it with my own ending and a few times I would actually fall back into the dream where my mind had taken it. I'd have some control over what was going on for a little while (not lucid, though), but eventually it would turn back into a regular dream.

Visualization exercises can yield interesting results

I've tried it today - interesting, and indeed reminds me about physical exercises, probably because you have to do conscious effort to construct dream continuation. Seems like it really helps to recall dreams, maybe because you focus your attention on this issue when imagine dream's sequel.
