Hi Emyly, welcome
You may be experiencing some type of weird dream. When this happens, do you feel aware, like you have control (unlike in normal dreams)? If not, you may just be having some kind of dream. When this happened what did you do?
When we sleep at night, most people's bodies "experience" (I can't think of the right word) Sleep or REM Atonia. This is basically your body paralyzing itself during REM sleep so that your body does not act out what you are dreaming or accidentally move around. What could be happening is that you are consciously experiencing this. Users that try to WILD, a "method" for lucid dreaming, occasionally experience this, and sometimes experience hallucinations such as the ones you are describing. It's certainly not something that has to happen every time; it's just something like a side-effect. Sleep Paralysis is a disorder where this happens. All these terms get mixed up a lot and I'm not even 100% sure of what I am talking about
I suggest that you browse the forums and read up on lucid dreaming if you don't already know about it, and also use the search function in the top right to search for similar things for what you are experiencing.
