Piercings (Recent experience and a couple ?'s)

A little over a week ago, my 13 year old daughter came home with a small bandaid on her nose. I asked about it and she said she had a huge pimple.
Later she came behind me as I sat in front of the PC and she gave me a hug and said "Sorry" she had lied.
A friend had stayed the night the night before and they decided to pierce their noses.
I shrugged, which was not the reaction she was expected. I told her she was staying with her Aunt and Uncle soon and he would rip her a new one, so I didn't have to say anything

Anyhow, the friend stayed over again that night when all this was going on. My 14 year old daughter said "COOL! Can I pierce my lip?"
I tried telling her she didn't have the pain threshhold... that the lips have many nerves in them and she didn't couldn't go through with it.
She came out of the bedroom a few minutes later, very excited. She had the nerve after all.

And if SHE had the nerves and pain threshhold to do it, then so did I lol

They properly sterilized everything and did theirs without any supervision at all. It went superbly. They've had no problems. At first they used small earrings, but I've since bought proper rings.

Me on the other hand... I'm an idiot. I give myself tattoos so I thought "Eh" about the piercing and used the same sterilization technique: alcohol. I don't know if it's that or something else. I had a fat lip for a couple of days. And because I couldn't eat with mine in, I took it out a lot more often.
The inside of my lip heals over quickly and most of the irritation came from there.

The proper lip rings are a bit thicker than earrings. It took awhile for my daughter to get hers in. But she did with no problem.
Me, on the other hand... It was a nightmare. I put it in outside in at first, so I could see the opening on the inside of my lip. It went through almost easily. The inside of my lip bled some, which made it even easier to see the opening. But the ring did NOT want to go in from the inside out. I went into what I call psuedo-shock. My ears started ringing, I became a little nausious(sp), very lightheaded and EXTREMELY hot, but I wasn't about to stop. I kept the ring where it was, partially through my lip. Then I took of my sweater, laid down on the bed and waited for it to pass.
I finally pressed it through and then it took forever because I could screw the front on.

I had a fat lip for two more days. My tongue is always fidgeting with the flat inside piece. Every now and then it tastes slimy. Blood? There is NO infection.
I take ibuprofen for the swelling and discomfort. I leave it in ALL the time. Anything else I can do to help the process along?

If you've read this far my hat goes off to you.
      But I have another question.

The girls aren't allowed to wear their piercings at school. It's not a problem for my youngest with the nose ring. It's so thin and tiny, she doesn't have a hard time putting it back in.
But what about my 14 year old? Now that our lips have a thicker ring... ??? She simply cannot wear it none stop for 6-8 weeks.
BUT, they're out of school for 2 weeks. Should that be okay if she wears it all the time when she's home?

You should never ever ever pierce anything but the ears by yourself. I'm surprised you didn't cause permanent damage to your lips. Go to a professional piercer and let him take a look at your lip. And no, she can't keep removing and putting the lip ring back in- go to a shop and get those small discreet plastic studs she can put in to keep it from closing, and heal properly.

Thanks for the advice. We are healing but boy is it a long process. There are no professional piercers in our area, unfortunately.
My daughter has only a couple of teachers who give her a hard time. For those classes, she usually just takes the stud off and keeps the backing in with her tongue.
I've been trying to talk her into wearing it backwards and hiding the flat part under makeup, but she's all about vanity and rebellion at this age

I keep mine in all the time except for cleaning once a day.
My ears have been giving me more trouble lately. I've had them pierced twice since I was a teen (I'm 34 or 35 now lol). I started wearing earrings again about 4 days ago (my ears are very easily irritated, so it's been years since I've worn anything). It was tough going in and the second piercing of my right ear keeps oozing blood. It's annoying but I guess it comes with the territory having not worn anything for so long.

Yeah, thats what I hate about piercings.. they take ages. I had my tragus pierced for 6 months, and it closed up after a NIGHT. I spent maybe 3 hours FORCING it in, the trashcan was full of tissues blotched with blood. I mean, its a TINY stud that's almost always hidden under my hair, but I just love it XD

There are tiny studs your kid could use for school I guess, but there's no convincing a rebel I suppose

It's kinda weird that you're bleeding though :/ When I wear earrings (once in a blue moon) I just pop it through the skin that grew over it, and I'm good. Unless you're being brutal, it shouldn't bleed. What I like to do is slowly opening the hole up with a THIN needle- then putting the earring in. Try that

I'm depressed about my nose pierce, the stud fell out while I was asleep, and I didn't notice for 24 hours, and it closed up. I'm gonna wait a few weeks, and try to peirce it again

Did you do your own piercings?
My 13 year old daughter pierced her nose and sometimes the stud falls out, so she complains about that. Someone gave her studs that have a screw-in/twisty type main piece. She can't figure out how to screw it in her nose without it hurting lol. I have no idea.

I've tried all sorts of metal for my earrings. It's funny, but out of everything I've pierced, my ears are most bothered. When they start irritating me, I have a bad habit of twisting the earring around. I think that's what made my ear bleed- I was just aggrevating it. I keep reminding myself to keep my hands OFF, and it's been okay since yesterday.

No, i didn't, I had friend do them for me. I love piercing other people, but I can't handle the sharp pain of piercing myself I guess. She shouldn't be messing around her nose stud so much, it needs a few weeks to heal first or she'll get a keloid- which is ugly as fuck and takes a LONG time to heal ;(

Which metals have you tired? Maybe you're allergic to nickel? My nose can't handle sterling silver for some reason, it will push out the stud and ooze pus o_o
