Thread: Cracked Toenail

On my right foot in the past, I had to have a wedge resection after cutting my toenail stupidly and enduring a horrible infection for a year. Recently my other toenail went a little red and uncomfortable, but the nail had already grown enough to not cause problems and it went fine.

Recently my left toenail which didn't have any surgery cracked. I was crawling on the floor amusing my baby sister when I must have moved funny and put weight on it, cracking the nail. A picture below shows how it cracked... its actually split apart, like I have cut the nail half way and too far down.

I just put a plaster over it to stop it snagging off, but I'm not sure if I should just cut the rest off and have it clean across. Problem is, its lower than it should be. I'm worried it will start to grow funny and result in another podiatry catastrophe.

Has anyone ever done this before, and what did you do?

My mother, and grandmother has had this issue a few times... It's nothing to worry about most of the time it will just grow out. BUT you must watch for infection, and clean it daily! =) That's the best advice I can give you, though i've never experienced this.

Or do what my mom did and have all of your toenails surgically (?) removed. She has diabetes and her nails were always giving her trouble, so off they came. She's never complained about not having them.
Your nail *should* fall off on its own if it's bad enough. I'd just keep it cleaned and wrapped with a bandage or something to keep it from snagging on stuff.

Really? I could never have that done. I like painting them, and no toenails would freak me out haha.

I think you should just try bandaging it up, properly instead of with a plaster and leaving it. As others have said, keep it clean. If that doesn't work... it might be time to dig out the scissors and gritting your teeth!

And aww playing with your baby sis, that's cute. My dogs are my babies, but no cracked toenails yet!

I recommend wearing thick socks or something next time you're crawling about

^^^ I don't like trimming my nails, so i can have them surgically removed?

Just to say I ended up repairing it with a nail glue from the Pharmacy. Just have to wait till it grows out now but should be fine until then.

If I had no toenails, I wouldn't know what to chew on.

How come this didn't appear in my control panel before!? I was wondering what happened to the toenail.

I was expecting something more dramatic. Like:
Me: Hey Loaf, how's the toenail.
Loaf: Well I was walking down the street one day in flip flops and then there was this big rock and I hit it and my nail made this noise and ripped and there was blood and gore EVERYWHERE and there was this granny who had a blood phobia who fainted and I was in so much pain and... etc.
