lets discuss Oprahs school, for those of you who know what I am talking about. too lazy to dig up links, or rather im sickly and my head hurts

my thoughts after watching the program was - what a heavy heart Oprah has, but delusional her approach is. I mean, the whole part where all the kids sat down on the table to eat christmas dinner, with a giant christmas tree behind them, might have well been a scene from harry potter!

sooooo much money, and soooo little girls got in. I dont understand it. Not to mention their living room areas had such luxurious furniture that probably the average american doesnt even own...

I feel bad for the boys! And even worse for the grandparents whom these kids are just gonna grow up to ignore. I want to believe that these girls might help change the face of south africa, but what if they just become disconnected from their own society and never learn how to change their current problems..just ignore it with oprahs money?

Even though I missed it, I know those girls will do great things for South Africa, and maybe even the world. They probably don't even consider using money as greedily as Americans do. They have more moral than that.

But the thing, the ONE thing, that ticks me off, is that some Americans were sooo greedy, SOOOO selfish, that they said that Oprah should've given that money to benifit American schools!!! The reason why she didn't it simlpy this: Most American kids DON"T care about ther education. So why would she give all those BILLIONS of dollars to benifit kids that care more about material possesions than their education???

Those girls deserve that school, and if America doesn't think so, then Bush won't be the only cause of our downfall...

oh no, definately africa deserves it. we have enough american dollars to fix our schools, just a matter of balancing the governments budget.

but....$40 million to benefit only roughly 500 girls? there is something still wrong about those numbers

I hope you are joking, but you are capable of actually making such statements : /

I think Ophra is doing quite some good, I only hope she is doing this to get media attention, and that besides it she gives even more but spreaded out over poor kids.

I know that it may seem a little selfish to hold our money here in the America's, but seriously, until we can feed ourselves, lets not throw THAT much money to help 500 people. There are more people than that dying here.

I do believe we need to find some way to limit the amount of money that one person can gain in this country.

I don't there there is an ultimate right answer to this stuff, though.

I think that particularly the entertainment industry (movies, music, and sports) should have caps on their salaries and all the other money they get from peddling their talents, goes to help out the less fortunate, but that's just me.

I agree with sloth, that there should be a limit on just how greedy someone can be before there is a shutoff valve.

My thoughts, exactly. It's absolutely ricockulous how much these people make. For them to live that phat off of, basically, "keeping us entertained" (and don't get me wrong, I love my entertainment) while so much of our country obviously needs so much more care....there's no excuse for it. (besides the fact that they help run this country, but that's another subject, all together)

Anyway, as far as the subject at hand, I didn't see her special, but I heard about the school. From what I know, I think it's a great cause, and I hope everything goes well with it.

I think Oprah likes to be seen to be giving away money, hence the low ratio of childeren to funding. Yeah, ok, it might do some good, but it's almost as if she's delusional - "I had a hard childhood, so I'm going to overtly shower a few young girls with money."

Not much different from the Michael Jackson "I had a strange childhood and I want to be peter pan and stay young forever/ fiddle with little childeren."

They aren't going to change a thing if they're pampered in luxury. To do something like that reveals it to be what it is - a stunt. Oprah can show how she's showering childeren in money and giving them the good life so that all the middle-class housewives who watch her show can feel collectively good about themselves.

Let's say someone has a gameboy, someone else asks to play the gameboy and that person says no, the person that was refused the gameboy says that person is mean or selfish, but would that mean the person with the gameboy would have been more rightjust without the gameboy in the first place? Or the person with the gameboy lets one kid play with it but not another, would the person with the gameboy have been nicer if the person never gave the gameboy out at all? Anyway Oprah is like the person who shares their gameboy with one person, it wouldn't have made her more morally superior if she didn't share the gameboy with anyone or didn't have the gameboy at all. It might not be fair that one person gets to play with the gameboy but the other one doesn't but why deny everyone a gameboy just because one person can't have one? I think it was nice for Oprah to spend money on kids with fewer opportunities.

"But the thing, the ONE thing, that ticks me off, is that some Americans were sooo greedy, SOOOO selfish, that they said that Oprah should've given that money to benifit American schools!!! The reason why she didn't it simlpy this: Most American kids DON"T care about ther education. That would tick me off if I got rich and when I first give away money to charity people start yelling at me that I should have given it to a differnt charity, that would make me want to keep my gameboy to myself.

I like that she is actually taking a stand about something that she believes in. I think it is wonderful to give to people who need it, no matter who that might be. I have to admit that Africa needs the money much much more than america does. Our gov. would piss it away anyway! So, who cares who she gave it to? The point is that she was generous enough to give away her money, which is more than we can say for a lot of people.
