Thread: The Erosion of Civil Liberty in America

It wasn't big news in the mainstream media. It might not have even been reported by them at all that Obama signed an executive order allowing DHS to take complete control of all communications systems in an "emergency."

^ Who cares? The US government clearly has absolute power, and they have had this power for years. The law is a technicality, nothing more.

This is something I really hate about most of my fellow libertarians: they don't seem to get it. The state is like a school yard bully, and the laws they write are analogous to the bully making up arbitrary "rules" for who gets filched on any given day. When you complain about the rules, you're still giving in to the modified version of reality that the bully wants to impose on you. How can you guys not see this?

So what do you do about it? Doesn't it make sense to bring the bullying to everyone's attention, to force them to start to see it for what it is? When the majority of people can no longer turn a blind eye on it then maybe the people can do something about it.

No you guys don't get it, North America isn't North America anymore, this isn't about bullies and following the law, this is about absolute corruption like you never knew before. This is gonna make Nazi times look like nothing.
What are we going to do about it, all we can do is revolt, share information like i do, and rebel. That's what.

If that's how you see things, then why do you even bother being a libertarian? Why not just be apolitical if you have already given up? The first step in fighting tyranny is making it well known that the tyranny exists. The type of tyranny we are facing is a type that most Americans don't even know is there. That is why Americans and even non-Americans by the millions are spreading the word. You can't fight an enemy if you don't even realize that the enemy exists. The next step will be voting out the tyrants. If the system turns out to be so broken and oppressed that the voting system is worthless, the next step will be armed revolution. We have to awake the sleeping giant first. And believe me... He is waking up!

I still consider it North America, and I still think our voting system can work, though it may get slightly rigged in some elections and corruption has been used for intimidation and disinformation purposes. We are dealing with an elusive bully, but it is still a bully, though it may be the worst bully in world history. When this stuff gets taken seriously by the vast masses, there will be no stopping us. The menace is feeding on ignorance of its existence. That ignorance is evaporating like a mud puddle in summer time.

Yes it's North America, but it doesn't feel that way anymore.

To be completely honest, I think the "Information Age" (with emphasis on the Internet) has gotten The Powers That Be to about the point of Damage Control. This world is changing so fast, we have to wonder how far 'ahead' TPTB really are? Corruption is coming to the forefront at an ever-quickening pace, and the numbers game of 'populace vs politicos' is becoming a factor in the whole thing, like it never has before. I can only imagine that TPTB will eventually find themselves having to deal with the fact that yesterday's tactics are becoming obsolete, and the faster the populace becomes awakened, the more diligent the elite will have to be to maintain power. Maybe that is just my optimism showing, but the exponential push for more surveillance and restriction shows that the watchers are trying as best they can to keep from being watched, themselves (while remaining diplomatic enough so as not to show the blatant face of fascism, as it would be counterproductive). That is why I think spreading awareness (at least) is probably the most important thing to be doing, at this moment in time. An illusion can only emulate the truth as longs as people choose to believe it - and people are getting tired of the smoke and mirrors.

The internet has made mass communication of ideas a lot more efficient and effective. It has also made otherwise taboo or embarrassing subjects to be freely discussed by large numbers of people. The spreading of ideas that had never been spread before is giving the public a whole new way of looking at things. While this has been going on, the government has been making major power plays. I am not sure if the two are connected, aside from the fact that the internet is the reason so many people are now calling the government out on their increases in power.

It also lets the 'audience' talk back, which has never happened in traditional media, except in the letters sections of the newspaper etc, which was extremely limiting. Now everybody can comment under videos and blog posts and articles etc, we're finding we have a voice and that we're not alone - what you're thinking, millions of other people are thinking too, and now we can connect with each other.

I think there needs to be a call to attention. With anything in life there is maintaining a balance and I think many Americans have chosen to live only a dream. If we could just get people to be self-aware and have a better understanding of how they relate to the world. Pull them away from all that powerful propaganda and they might just find themselves awakened.

This is probably way out there but i think education adjusted direct democracy is the only way liberty can survive in the future. I imagine it something like this:
Every legislative and elective procedure is decided by a public vote.
Everyone can get in on the vote but people with expertise in the area will have more weight.
To get the extra weight in a certain area you either obtain a formal education in the field or take a test to prove you have obtained the expertise by other means.
There can still be political parties, each of which would have a chance to express why to vote one way or the other from their point of view.
Inaccurate claims by a party will result in a permanent note at the footer of each of their publications that says how many times have they been wrong and how many times have they flat out lied.

This would have been unimaginable a few decades ago but i'm thinking now, with everybody and their grandmother hooked into fastbook via their smartphone, it could be doable. There are still some cases where decisive power would have to be fronted to an elected official, where secrecy is required, such as military and police work but if kept to a case by case basis with a randomized peer overview it should be fine. Also, yes i know those 5 points by themselves are naive and nowhere near enough to make it work but these are supposed to be the core principals of the government and no more simplistic than any other governing form's ones.

I don't think any democratic system will protect liberty in the way that the constitution set out to. People are human. Human beings can be easily mislead. We are predictable creatures who have needs and drives that can be exploited. Putting the violence of the state into the hands of people won't likely make things much better. There are already too many people who have very little understanding of politics and even less who have any understanding of economics. As long as power is there to be abused those who would abuse it will.

I don't have any solution. I think that the technology that will come in the next 50 years will so drastically alter society that whatever structure we have now won't work. I think we're already at the point now where the current political structure is insufficient, but we're not far enough into it to know what kind of new structure to put in place. I would like to see a smaller government but I don't think that the majority or those in power do.
