Red face New Blade Runner Film

So ya, Ridley Scott is working on a new Blade Runner film after three decades; if you haven't seen the original yet you should do so immediately because it's one of the most awesome films ever.

There's really no other info on it at the moment, except it's not a remake; Harrison Ford has always said he hated working on the film so it's unlikely he'll star, so presumably it's just a film set in the Blade Runner universe.

Hopefully Vangelis will return to score it. I also hope they don't use CGI; what they did just using traditional techniques still looks miles better today from both an artistic and realistic standpoint than modern technology.

Good to know it's not a remake, I can stop starting to get pissed off now.

That would be, but I doubt they will. Blade Runner was one of the coolest looking sci-fis ever made. People are just lazy and trying to make a buck most likely. Otherwise they'd probably do something more original, like rip off a Philip K Dick Novel that hasn't been made into a movie yet.

Interesting for sure. He's also doing an Alien prequel. Could be pretty cool... and at least it's the actual director who created the originals to begin with... but then again, when's the last time Ridley Scott did a good movie? Hopefully going back to his roots will inspire him back to greatness.

Xei, I totally agree on the practical effects over CGI and modern digital wizardry for the most part, but I doubt they'd go full-on practical these days. I'd be happy with a well-thought-out blend of the 2 like Jackson used in LoTR.

I really hate how Hollywood cannot make original movies anymore.

I can't find the list, but this year alone saw very few original films. I think even worse is the fact that they are remaking really weird movies now, for example: Footloose.

Don't be so quick to write this off as a cash-in. Deus Ex, which is also cyberpunk, is getting a prequel real soon, and it's shaping up to probably be game of the year. Original Deus Ex games are obviously not as old Blade Runner, but still over 10 years old.

That said, I actually watched Blade Runner with a friend recently, and I quite liked it. What I liked the most about it was the scenery and music (Vangelis was amazing for his time). While I did like the start up of the film, the ending and execution of the plot idea wasn't quite to my liking. It just seemed way too confined, and was also very remniscent of other investigative movies and series from that time. That is not a bad thing in it self, but I sort of felt it was a waste of a cyberpunk movie, to have a film flow that in the end was so simple and to an extent overused.

I am looking forward to this though. On the subject of CGI, I think they should aim towards something like what they did with the original, but there's nothing wrong with using CGI at all. My biggest issue with CGI is how demanding it can be for the actors, when all they have to work with is a blue screen and the occasional fellow actor. Stay positive is what I think.

I am really excited about Deus Ex, just because I loved the first game so much. Video games really don't follow the same rules.

I'm not so sure about that... can you give an example of CGI that looked as good as the cityscapes in Blade Runner? When you're dealing with diffuse light, smoke, and noir scenery, I doubt current technology alone is actually good enough yet to pull off the same level of simultaneous realism and artistry.

I know what you mean about the story; it wasn't really a detective story in any sense. It was pretty free form and meditative. But I think that was the point. It was more an atmospheric, contemplative thing.

We can accomplish nearly anything with CGI now, but the problem is people cutting corners. Bad CGI is easy to hide or most people just shrug it off, so film makers don't care too much.

CGI does backgrounds a lot better than it does characters. I like the production model of movies like Sin City, with human actors placed in digital environments.

Well, it does certain kinds of characters really well... namely insectlike or mechanistic ones. What it has trouble with is flesh. Heh... sort of like what Jeff Goldblum character was saying in The Fly... "The computer doesn't love the flesh... nobody has taught it to". It especially has trouble with human or nearly human facial expressions... google Uncanny Valley if you're interested. Fascinating stuff... the closer a simulacrum gets to reality the more disturbing tiny discrepancies become. More stylized is better.

Marvo, in relation to what you said just above... it's the well-know Production Triangle...

I totally disagree. The storyline of Deus Ex was amazing, and the gameplay was anything but mediocre.

      Also, others agree.

Blade Runner is one of my all-time favorite movies, so I'll be going to see this as soon as it comes out. I'll be looking forward to it with a mix of excitement and caution though. Blade Runner was a long time ago, and Ridley Scott has done a lot since. It's a tall order, even for him, but there's always a chance that it could be almost as awesome as the original.

You are missing out! I think the game fairly well, but it's still worth a shot. If you have Steam, PM me your name. I may have a Game of the Year for the two games to share.

On Blade Runner, if Ridley Scott is attached, I have no fear that this will be a great film. He considered Blade Runner his masterpiece.
