      Dancing, worms and cards

Some things that might be relevant:
      - I'm 18 and I'm in my senior year of high school
      - I don't follow any religion really, but I believe in a single God
      - I'm really terrified of illness but not afraid of death.
      - I'm a girl, and I'm bisexual, and it doesn't make much of a difference to me if I have a dream about being with a girl or a guy.

First I was on a wooden stage. I was dancing with a guy.. not like slow dancing, it was more like he was trying to teach me a bollywood dance. Then out of nowhere, there were more people on the stage, and they were dancing with him. I had stopped dancing. In front of the stage, there was a grassy hill with a small dirt road. near the stage there were tables with large white platters and there were large pieces of raw meat on them. The pieces of meat were huge, like as big as the body of a cow (without the limbs and head, just the torso). When I saw the pieces of meat, that was the first thing I thought the meat may have come from. However, I thought it wasn't possible because the people I was with (the dancers) were of the Hindu religion and the cow is sacred animal. I saw some colorful flags/ bunting that hung around the stage. I thought maybe there was going to be some kind of celebration soon. The people who were dancing asked me if I had filmed them because apparently I was supposed to. I said yes of course I was and showed them two cameras that I had in my pockets, one silver and one grey. They were confused because I hadn't taken them out of my pockets until that moment so how could I have been filming them? Then I showed them I had a secret hidden camera that was really tiny, weirdly enough it was somewhere on my body or face but i can't remember where specifically. Then I showed them I had another camera, on my index finger, but it was some kind of highly advanced camera that just looked like one of those "glue dots", like a sticky, clear, tiny circle. Suddenly my friend showed up, and she brought a girl from my old school with her. I think I dreamed about my friend because I was talking about her earlier with someone, since her birthday is soon. However, the other girl was someone that I didn't like back in my old school. She was wearing a bright pink "puffa" jacket. Both of the girls looked older than they are now so maybe this dream was set in the future. I also assume it was set in India but I may be wrong. The dancers and I greeted the girls. The girl I used to dislike in my school just pounced at me, and hugged me and tried to kiss me. She said, "Isn't she adorable, she looks just the way she did back in school. She still has that angry child face!" And she smiled at me. In my dreams, I often feel like there is another version of me who has been living the life I am experiencing in the dream, but the "waking life" version of me is just put into the dream, replacing the other version of me, completely out of context. So I have to see what happens and just go with it. This was one of those dreams. It seems like I was an adult, I was in a relationship with this girl from school, and I had gone on a trip to India with my girlfriend and my friend. When I say I disliked this girl in high school, I mean we weren't friends and at some points she did things that annoyed me. I didn't hate her or anything and I don't think she hated me. We just didn't have any similar interests or friends in common, and I found her to be a bit dumb, but generally we got along. Anyway, suddenly, everyone started running. I got the feeling that I had to run too, because someone was coming to get us. I didn't see anyone coming for us, but I just got the feeling that someone was coming. I couldn't make out whether we had done something wrong and they were trying to arrest us, or they were trying to hurt us. I followed my friends and the dancers uphill, along the dirt road.
after this, the dream was pretty much over, but immediately after I had another dream. There was a large worm or caterpillar thing, not sure which - It was beige/yellowish and had indentations/lines on it, like a larvae or a maggot, but it was larger and had sort of like little legs, like a caterpillar. It was on my hand. It stretched across the palm of my hand, to give you an idea of the length of the worm-thing. It went into my mouth (gross, I know) and down my throat. I felt it go through my whole body, including my head. Suddenly, I felt it coming up. I knew that what came up was the same worm, but it was a metre long and it was completely black, like it was covered in tar. When it was completely outside of me, another black worm followed it, and then another. Then a half - black stained worm came out - the other half was still beige. Then another one came out but this one was entirely beige. It was as if the smaller worm had searched my body for disease or evil or toxins or something, and grew until it was 5 metres long, and then split into 5 worms. I felt like the black worms that came out had cleaned out something in me or healed me of an illness or something. I should have felt disgusted at the worms in my mouth and body but I didn't. I was just a bit weirded out and wondering what was going on. Once the worms were all completely out, five red and black cards appeared in front of me. They represented different things, Like misfortune, death, illness, etc. - They looked like tarot cards. I think I remember some of the specific images that were on the cards, one of them was a sick man in a bed, with a shadow of someone standing over him. Another was the grim reaper standing next to a little boy. Another was a man in a hospital bed, and his head was covered in a white sheet. The cards turned over on their own one by one. All the cards were face down except for one that remained. It floated in front of me, with the image facing me. It was a person, with a reluctant expression on their face, standing next to a demon or maybe it was Satan, and they were signing a contract. I suppose it was a 'deal with the devil'.. but the word(s) that were written on the card were "Tah Buh" which I read as "taboo". Then the other cards that were face down turned to ash. Suddenly I was on the floor, in a prayer position. Then I looked up in front of me and saw a shadow of someone with horns on the concrete floor.. and it kept getting closer. Then I woke up.

      Hi,

It looks like these two dreams could be trying to help you deal with the effects of the narcolepsy that you mentioned in another post.

Though you didn’t mention how long ago the symptoms began, dealing with their impact on your everyday life is, of course, a very hard thing to do.

So the first dream where you go to India and attend a lively festival with lots of dancing could be hinting that understandably, you’ve maybe tended to be a “long way” from being able to enjoy yourself very much.

If so, the dream could be showing that it would good to make an effort to “focus” on some simple emotional pleasures to balance out the strains of dealing with your narcolepsy (you have to film the fun of a celebration going on with delicious food being served; the man is teaching you to dance Bollywood style).

This idea might have appeared in your dream about the statue which tried to kill you.

For example, there’s maybe a chance of unfortunately “turning to stone” yourself (being “killed”) if you aren’t able to allow in enough of your emotions.

This would be the opposite effect of what a “normal” statue of Venus de Milo would be, that is, to evoke in you a deep earthy connection with emotion and relationships.

For some people with narcolepsy, allowing in feelings can be hard to do because strong emotions can sometimes cause certain unpleasant symptoms to appear but the current dream seems to be emphasizing the need to chance it and to let them in, even the scary ones.

For instance, the statue in the other dream is moved by non-human means and is “mechanical” in itself, maybe suggesting the very frightening idea that mankind is at the mercy of forces and destinies that on the surface appear to have no logic or compassion for our suffering.

Getting support to talk about this hard to swallow fact and to let out your feelings about it is probably a good way to go, however hard it might be to get started at it.

In your current dream, two of the cameras were in your pocket while another one is sort of a “science fiction” type and so maybe nothing really was being filmed by you, possibly symbolizing an understandable hesitation in yourself to see and understand the real need to continually and consciously experience your sometimes difficult emotions.

It’s possible that not doing so has resulted in a kind of disconnection from real life to some extent, shown by your feeling that “another you” has been experiencing the events of various dreams and the “waking life” version of yourself is just sort of plunked down in them.

The fact that the doubtful filming event is suddenly replaced by the arrival of an acquaintance from high school whom you didn’t like could be showing that a certain trait etc. of the girl is one that you have as well, maybe even suggesting that you’d be “a little dumb” to avoid experiencing more of your emotions.

For example, the subsequent frightening arrival of unseen pursuers could symbolize the “attack” of ignored emotions and this would be even worse than trying to voluntarily face some unpleasant feelings in general.

It’s safe to say that the second dream comes from the deepest, instinctive layers of your unconscious mind and is trying to help you to deal with the effects of your narcolepsy and with life overall.

This is shown by the unusual image of the very non-everyday action of the worm/caterpillar cleansing your body and mind before emerging in a different form.

Understanding a dream image like the worm/caterpillar is often helped by looking at how people have, for example, viewed worms and caterpillars over the centuries as expressed in folk tales, mythologies, plays and stories etc. etc.

That’s because the source of these myths etc. is the same source as a dream, that is, the psyche.

For instance, a caterpillar has always been connected with the mystery of transformation and rebirth since it enters a pupa and later emerges as a butterfly.

A butterfly is a symbol of the ever-changing and growing personality or “soul” and is connected with a strong link being formed with one’s own unconscious mind or “psyche” (psyche in Greek means “butterfly”).

So the dream seems to be encouraging you to accept something icky (you let the caterpillar/worm enter your mouth) because in the end it will “cleanse” you in an important way, allowing for more growth and self-development.

This process is something that is valuable to let happen on an ongoing basis by following quiet instinctive intuitions and feelings that tell you when it’s needed once more.

This is where the “worm” idea also comes in because it too has been connected with transformation, birth and growth which can follow a “death” caused by hard blows from outer circumstances for example.

A worm is usually seen as being “primitive” by its appearance and living beneath the earth. It also moves in a similar way to the unwelcome snake and it’s often slimy.

Additionally, worms were considered as being the same as maggots (which are actually insect larvae) and therefore were connected with the unpleasant realities of death and burial in the past.

Overall then, the worm symbolizes a largely unconscious (under the ground) psychological process which can help to break down any unhelpful attitudes in the personality which are tending to slow down personal growth too much.

Once this breaking down of old ways etc. has been successful, it’s then possible for renewal and rebirth to appear.

For example, in the myth of the Phoenix (which is also a symbol of transformation and rebirth), what first emerges from the ashes is a tiny worm, suggesting that in reality, the “despised thing” that represents the unpleasant reality we have to absorb can actually be the initiating source of our overall potential to become a fully developed person over time.

Human beings are usually a chaotic mass of emotions related to unmet desires, resentments, disappointments, hopes, plans and so on.

Psychologically, these aspects of oneself have to be “burnt off” in the process of understanding, equivalent to the Phoenix being consumed in flames.

The white ash left after the flames died down symbolized a kind of corrosive residue but also the fact that a spirit of transformation had been released, allowing, for instance, the color of the totally black worms of your dream to change to a pleasanter beige color.

So it looks like the caterpillar/worm in your dream probably represents the need to voluntarily allow deeply instinctive and natural processes to help to “cleanse” and “break down” the heavy darkness of dealing with hard blows in life (the black worm/caterpillar that grew to be five metres long) into smaller and more manageable fragments that can be handled more easily.

The number five (e.g. there are five worms in the end) is usually symbolical of such things as love, health and humanity in general.

The number five appears again with the five Tarot-like cards which have various pictures of misfortune, death and illness on them.

Again, the idea of fate and forces beyond the ego are involved because the cards are floating in the air as well as picturing things that humans can’t really avoid completely.

The fact that the cards have pictures of humans on them and follow the appearance of the five worms probably points to the need of conscious work and attention needing to be paid to what emerges from the instinctive process started by the caterpillar/worm.

For example, various intuitions, gut feelings, spontaneous thoughts and fantasies might appear and these would have to be given form in some way, perhaps by drawing or painting them or in writing a story about them etc.

That way, the potential soothing qualities that they contain would become real in the outside world.

In contrast, “Satan” could symbolize the “spiritual death” that could occur if a person gives in and prefers not to somehow face in a reasonably head-on way the more unpleasant sides of life overall.

Anyway, without knowing anything much about you, this interpretation of your dreams might not fit your personal circumstances very well but I hope these ideas are not too confusing and that they can be helpful in some way.

Please feel free to make any comments or to ask any questions that you may want to about this particular way of looking at your dreams.
