Two Teleporters: One to the Future, the other, Past

I am a senior in high school and in about 5 years I should be graduating college

I had a dream last night that I was in this lab that worked on teleportation. They had two machines: one that sent people to the future, and one to the past. The company had mastered the technology of the teleporter for the past, and the technology for the future teleporter was still in its early stages. So, I went to the past and everything was so festive and looking around things were vibrant. It was like I was back to a time that I had lived in (I don't know what exactly the time was). So the scene changed and I was back in the lab. I then decided to go to the future. When I got there, I knew I was 5 years in the future. I was stepping out of a car, and I was looking for my dad. I walked into a house, and when I was inside, the walls were blank, there was absolutely nothing. I hadn't seen a single person in the future at all. The whole scene was blank and bland. Suddenly, had this little handheld pad that had letters on it. I had the thought that if I typed in something that my dad knew that I loved, then I would be able to find him. So I typed in the word baseball. nothing happened and I continued to walk throughout the house and I couldn't find anyone. Not friends or family. The streets were bland and the house was plain and white on the interior. I felt calm, but with an urgency to find something.

With the limited information you gave, any possible interpretation I give may not be accurate. And, as I think should always be said when interpreting someone else's dreams, it is oft said the best interpreter is the dreamer his or herself, as that person knows their mind best. Still, I'll give this a go, and you can see what you think.

First thing that strikes me is the differences between the two machines. First the machine to the past is already perfected, but the future one is still in it's early stages as you stated. I find this interesting because it hints to the idea that the past is done, static, but the future is different; your actions can change what will be.

You went through to the past first, finding it so much more vibrant, vivid, and bright then the future. Is there something in your past you are clinging to? Perhaps you miss your early childhood, or maybe you had more joy in your past than you do at the present?

Now to the future. You find the future bleak and empty, and you are searching for your father. I think this is very interesting to contrast with the past when you entered THAT machine.

Here's the pattern I notice. You seem to be looking for something, and the future is not yet even written in your dream. Your past was full of fun, warmth, and joy. You seemed rather nervous about the future, seeking something out that you could not find. Could it be that you are worried about what the future holds for you? You still have 5 years until you graduate from High School, yet you mentioned college. Do you often think about college? Do you feel some pressure to take up a field you don't want to be in--or even pressure to enroll in a certain college?

It seems to me this dream is about concern or fears about the future. It seems you enjoy the past, are very nostalgic for it, but you view the future as possibly bleak and scary. You may even feel uncomfortable about your plans for the future.

Again, just a few patterns I noticed in the dream, and the best I can make of it without knowing any more about you.

I agree with SilverWolf that it seems you are worried about what the future might hold for you. I would stress that the emptiness of the future may be not a sign that the future is indeed bleak, but rather because it is unknown, and thus you do not know what to populate it with yet, and that unknown scares you.

I think it is significant that you are looking for your father in your future. We look for our parents for guidance as we grow up, but by the time the future comes you will be grown up, and your parents will no longer be the ones to lead you, and that part may make you a bit nervous to some extent - I may of course be wrong about that, so many possible interpretations.

Another possibility is: in dream interpretations it often helps to look at other characters as parts of oneself. So if in the future, you were looking for the part of you that is like your father, perhaps you are wondering whether you will be like your father in some way when you grow up, or very different?

If neither of those interpretations is right, it might help us if you told us a bit more about the issues that worry you about your future, or what your relationship with your father is - that might make a difference in interpretation. Also of course, it could make a difference if your father were let's say seriously ill and you were worried about him. See, there is so much that you know about yourself and your circumstances, which could change the interpretation of this dream significantly. Thus, if you want us to find better ideas of what the dream could mean, perhaps you can tell us a bit more about yourself. Or if you are not willing to share that, perhaps you can figure it out yourself thinking about this dream in your context.

I would say you guys are fairly correct in my feelings for my future. I do fear it, and what my future my hold for me.

      Now, to my personal life.

My dad is a great father. he is a great man and always puts my brothers and me before himself and his work. He is a hard worker and loves his job. However, for the past five year, he and I have been butting heads all the time (more so a year or two ago vs now). Lately I do feel pressured about going to college even though I do want to attend one. But, he still stays on me when it comes to me slacking off, which has become extremely rare nowadays. When he catches me doing something wrong, he comes down on me hard, which is what a father should do.

If you guys would like to know more in regards to my personal life, feel free to ask. As for the dream, I tried my best to write as much as I could remember about it.

      Thank you guys so much!

Based on what you wrote, could it be that this dream is about your fear that you and your father are growing apart? You have trouble finding your father in the future because you fear that you have trouble finding common ground with him, trouble finding the parts of your personality that relate the best to your father? Part of growing up is becoming one's own person, and we may feel like we grow apart from our parents. When I was a young girl, my mother and I were very close. Then when I was 15 and 16 things changed, and I started stressing more and more the differences between us to ourselves. However, recently I am discovering that I have been too reluctant to admit to myself how much I am like my mother after all in some ways, how much I have identified with her over the years. So to some extent I have stressed the differences so much that I did not notice the similarities. Could it be that this is also the case for you? Butting heads with one's parents is part of growing up, and it may even continue to be part of your relationship once you become an adult and the relationship between you changes, or you may find that you will grow closer to oneanother at some point again.

I'd agree with Joanna there, so I've little to add, other than after reading what you wrote, I'd stand by my original analysis regarding your fear or anxiety of the future, seeping into your dreams. I love reading your dream analyses Joanna, they are always interesting.

i have got to say you both have nailed it, especially Joanna. I think that you guys have gotten to the heart of the meaning of this dream, and I really appreciate that. It amazes me how a seemingly straightforward a dream can seem, and yet have precise correlation with ones daily life in regards to interactions, feelings, and thoughts.

      Thank you so much again!

I wonder about the baseball connection.
Do you like baseball? Or can it be your dad?

my dad and I love baseball. I have been playing it almost year-round since I was 5. I recently decided at the beginning of this past summer that I wasn't going to play it anymore

That's the common ground then and why you chose it in the dream.

Could you be feeling guilty over stopping to play since it is a common ground with your dad?

since I have quit baseball, I haven't really felt guilty. he never really forced me to play or pressured me to play, but I kinda do feel guilty about quitting after he and my mother paying for equipment and lessons and team fees. stuff like that.
