Yes, telling them to be more confident is a big thing I think. People don't try new things in dreams, because they think that they need a technique for it. When you only really need techniques when you lack the confidence. So instead of adding another technique to the mix, just try confidence first. Believe that you can do it, if you fail, then try a technique, but realize that it is your confidence that is lacking. It wasn't until I heard that some people fail at flying that I started failing at it.
I don't think that confidence and fear are the same thing.
