Is that normal? Was I doing something wrong? Is my energy low...? Do you guys talk to your guides?
I'd like to share a few ideas that may be of benefit.
One thing I noticed is that you said you were on a "physical plane." Of course, you were most likely on a nonphysical plane, despite how physical it may have appeared. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "physical plane," but if you are referring to the dimension resonating closest to our physical dimension, then you are referring to what is called the "Real Time Zone. The RTZ is essentially an energetic reflection of the physical plane, so it appears to be the physical dimension. This is the lowest vibrating dimension that is encountered while out of body, in my experience anyway, and is considered to be a buffer zone of sorts between the physical and astral dimensions, although not necessarily a part of the astral planes.
Having said that, in my countless OBEs I have not once encountered a "guide" in the RTZ. Any attempt to reach out to one was futile in this dimension. It wasn't until I started to penetrate into higher dimensions, into the astral planes, that I was able to contact guides. They would even make their way into my experiences without any intention on my part. My advice would be to shift into a higher dimension before setting the intention to meet a guide. There are various techniques for shifting into higher dimensions which can be found in Chapter 9 of the book The Phase: http://obe4u.com/files/the_phase.pdf The intention may shift you directly into an encounter with a guide, or you may have to call out again once you have made the shift.
Another thought that may be worth looking into is why you wish to meet a spirit guide. Do you think they will take you places, show you things, or reveal information to you that you are incapable of accessing on your own? Do you believe that an out of body guide or the experience that may result from meeting one will benefit your life? What are you really looking for? I think the answer is the same for everyone. We are looking for happiness. A more refined and more lasting form of happiness than what the material world could ever provide. But consider that experiences out of body are just as temporary and ultimately as unsatisfactory as any other conditioned experience in the physical world. Perhaps the true happiness we desire cannot be found in mystical excursions with spirit guides. Perhaps there are no shortcuts to the purification of the mind, no shortcuts to the elimination of the mind's defilements which are the cause of all forms of stress and suffering, no shortcuts to the cultivation of the highest form of unconditioned happiness that we are all ultimately seeking.
I'm not saying that it's wrong to explore the various layers of our spiritual self or spiritual reality or investigate concepts like spirit guides and such. I'm simply saying that our motivations should be examined to ensure that our thoughts, intentions, and actions are in line with the results that we desire. As an example, in my earlier years of spiritual exploration I was under the impression that I could somehow become an enlightened spiritual master by accessing the highest spiritual dimensions and learning the deepest spiritual truths via my out of body experiences. Had I focused my efforts into actions that actually led to the enlightenment and purification of the mind, I would be that much more developed and my mind would be that much more illuminated today. Sure, I had some pretty transcendental and revelatory experiences and acquired some fascinating and even beneficial information regarding the nature of my self and reality, but these experiences left my mind no less defiled and its tendency to create stress and suffering was not addressed through this means of experience.
(As a side note, my mind is/was not particularly any more or less defiled than anyone else conditioned by western society or the human experience in general. We all have attachments, desires, aversions, delusions, and ignorance of various degrees, and these defilements are the cause of all stress and suffering in our minds. I don't believe I experienced any more stress or suffering than the average person. I want to make this clear in case some got the idea that I was suffering far more than what is applicable to their own experience.)
Take care
