I have a distinct knowing when I am awake, So I do not use that as a reality check. Quoted below for your reference.

This is about the same suspicion you have before you do a reality check.
Edit: This might be a good opportunity to share one of my LDs that involves this topic. I won't go into detail. It is just an example.
I project out of my bed from that in between sleep state sweet spot. Walk through the house a bit. Because my house feels so real like I simply got out of bed I decide to do the flying test just to make sure I didn't just get out of bed naturally. I fly on to my front yard, confirming that it is definitely a projection (Or LD whatever name you prefer)
I see someone outside the front of their house. I start flying in the air. The person notices me. I fly right down to the mall. Some people become alarmed that I am flying. I had to land and explain to someone, I'm learning to project, I don't really know where I am, this is new to me. And so forth. They seem to understand and everyone calms down.
The reason I mentioned that particular LD, is I didn't really think about people in my LD becoming alarmed at my flying, but on that occasion they were alarmed by it. However I had other times where I seen people flying in the sky just like me and it having being normalized. It's almost like the different LDs were two different cultures in that way.
