Well lucidgamer if this was your first experience, then the odds are that you were very excited and didn't really have a plan for when you became lucid, you realised that you were in a dream yet you didn't really know what to do.
Now I'm hardly an expert but my advise would be to picture yourself becoming lucid, ok you do the normal, RC and stabalise, maybe feel some of the textures of your surroundings, smell and sight like you mentioned too. But then picture what your going to do next, I mean this is a hard thing, I can do anything I want, gargghh choices!!
If you don't keep focus you will lose lucidity as you mentioned and the dream will play out as it wants -
How dare it, it's our subconscious and we want control, right?
Before you go to sleep just plan what your gonna do, e.g I will stabalise, then i will try flying or try searching for someone, just get your brain focused on something and keep the RC's and stabilisation techniques up and you'll be able to lengthen your lucid fun time!
Although more control will come with more practise, but the more you believe the quicker it is! =].
Good luck mate!!!
