Part 1-Preparation for Incubation

My theory on dream incubation is that you need to know how you personally process information, and what it is from waking life that sticks in your dreams. That way you can carefully 'flood' your brain with the things you want to dream about during the day. To start this process off, you should start a section in your DJ called 'Influence Recall', and keep a track of everything in the dream that has turned up as a result of the day's influence (this could be anything) Mine:

Influence Recall: IIIII IIIII IIII
Intended People: IIIII IIIII
Intended Scenario: III
Intended Place: IIII
Intended Affect: III
Choline Bitartrate: II

If your Recall count is quite high, then you can do thing during the day which will influence the chance of you dreaming about a certain thing, ie, listening to certain music, watching a certain film. To help you decide what to use, take note of whether you took the information in audibly, visually, written etc. Once you have started to get the intended influence (which you clearly state before you sleep) into a dream you're ready for your VILD scenario.

Part 2- VILD Scenario

It's helpful to have a favourite dream character, either one you've written yourself, a a family member, a famous person, or a character in a book/film as one of the influences which you factor in in Part one. This way, you're more sure to have 'someone' quite reliable to help you reality check. If your place or scenario is a pretty high count instead, factor that in. Next, write out a dream scenario with a reality check in it as if it were unfolding like a novel:

I am in a small study, it has two cosy brown armchairs, which are in front of a roaring log fire in a grand brown stone fireplace. The walls are made from old grey stone, but the tapestries on the wall are a very homely shade of Burgundy, and there are patterned rugs of a similar shade on the grey wooden floor. My favourite dream character is in the armchair opposite mine (lets call him Randel for simple reference) are having a deep conversation in the room lit only by firelight. We are both leaning slightly into each other. He smiles at me and says,
'Perhaps you might like to do a reality check'
I look slightly confused.
'How?' I ask
He pauses briefly, looking thoughtful.
'Well, how about plugging your nose and seeing if you can still breathe?' he replies gently.
I plug my nose, and breathe up a huge amount of air, which passes through as it normally would.
'I'm dreaming?' I ask, still coming to terms with the fact.
'You're dreaming' he grins
I hug him, and ask him to help me change the dream scene.

If you took more things in audibly, then record it and it it on your Ipod...Remember to think of this happening throughout the day, and if possible, go to bed a while before you sleep so you can focus on it.
