Pick whatever position is comfortable for you, but it must be one you can hold for a long time without moving a muscle, swallowing a lot, etc. Remember, you are trying to trick you body into a sleep state while remaining aware, so the normal starting sleeping position is going to yield the best results. The only issue then is not to actually fall asleep!!!
I too cannot sleep well on my back, but I've noticed that when I use binaural beat recordings (always laying on my back) I easily slip in and out of sleep, various trance states, and full waking state.
