      Question Hypnagogic Hallucinations

      Why do they they happen and when? Up until the past week, I've never had any distinct or recurring HH. Before then, i've probably had 2 or 3 random video game noises. Within the last 2 WILD attempts (only one of which, i got lucid, the other one seeing as I was so unused to HH, i believed that I was in the beginning of the dream already, however, there was no dream scene and i quickly tried to create one to no prevail) I have heard voices.
      The second attempt (which I just awoke from) ended with me having a bombard of voices. I was going to wake myself up but ended up trying to exaggerate the voices with resulted in the voices quietening and eventually shutting up. These voices probably happened all within one or two minutes and quickly lead into the dream.
      But why HH now? Nothing has changed during my daily life that I can recall of (it's 3:37am >_>)
      First WILD attempt: afternoon nap
      Second WILD attempt: WBTB=30mins+

      Thanks in advance~

      ..I just realised something. I go into HH pretty much EVERY NIGHT, but it will freak me out so much that I jolt awake and after a couple of times I just get sick and tired of it and roll over and become unconscious and have non-lucid dreams.. I just have HHs naturally, spontaneously, without attempting them or intending them.. It's freaky but now I know to let them be, I'll.. ..just try and not be freaked out XD

      So I guess they can happen whenever you're relaxed in your bed? ^^;

      Thanks for your reply, MissyLucy,
      I've done relaxation in bed and had other successful WILDs before, they just didn't come with nearly quite as strong HH as these few times

      ..I actually prefer it when they're not strong, as they tend to freak me right out ^^;;

      I guess it's an individual thing. Have you tried soft classical music? That sometimes works for me..

      Nah, i tend to dislike listening to music while sleeping. It's not that the HH bothers me, I just want to find how why it's suddenly gotten so strong. I'm quite thankful of it, lol. I can easily get into a WILD ever since.

      There hasn't been a ton of research done into the causes of HH. Honestly, less is known about that sort of thing than dreams in general.

      What is known is that they most often occur during N1 sleep, but they can also pop up right before sleep, too.

      I personally think they're there to mimic physical sensations to keep your mind occupied with.

      They occur while your body is in SP, but your mind isn't sleeping, so it reasons that the body must also be awake. This isn't the case, so the brain gets confused as to what's going on and creates these emulations in order for it being awake, to make sense. And when the logic blob in our brain finally goes dormant, we transition into a dream.

      ..I'm no brain surgeon, nor am I a psychologist or psychiatrist. This is just an explanation I came up with that makes sense to me, in my limited knowledge of the workings of the human brain and mind..

      But this still doesn't make senses, because i've WILD many times and i've only had strong HH like this probably about twice.

      I think I read somewhere that you're more likely to experience more intense HH if you're very fatigued.

      Don't know how accurate that is, but it makes a bit of sense that you'd be hitting that first phase of sleep pretty fast if you're really tired.
