      Question Terrified by audible Hallucinations

Ok, so I get to the hallucinations point a lot (even before I knew that they're the road to Lucid Dreaming), and the freak the daylight out of me.

I'm already quite paranoid, so suddenly hearing a male voice say "snup" (which, in Dutch, sounds like the word for candy) jolts me and I end up lying still, eyes wide open, heart pounding. I even whispered "..I.. ..I don't have any candy" (in Dutch, obviously), half expecting someone to be in my closet (literally the "Candy Man"?).

I really have a hard time sleeping after that.

Will I ever succeed in a WILD? Are there ways to overcome this manic fear?

I would suggest practicing meditation. It will help you detach from this fear and realize there is nothing really to be afraid of.

Thank you. What kind of meditation do you suggest? Would you suggest music? I've had a few random lucid dreams in the past week alone, so I want to actually make one happen myself, rather than just waiting for one to happen on its own.. ..this seems to be a good beginner-technique, but it's not going to work if it freaks me out, is it

Should I meditate on "voices aren't real" or something?

That is a difficult question to answer because there are many answers. There is meditation for concentration and tranquility of mind (samatha) but I don't know how useful that would be for dream induction because you need thoughts and sensations to arise in order to dream. So you may find it more helpful to meditate on awareness (vipassana). This way you will be able to watch the hypnagogic hallucinations come and go with greater detachment and understanding. It's important to really know that the voices are not actually scary, but that you are giving rise to judgments and emotions which you don't like. I had a dream once where all I could see were patches of pink and green. I was absolutely terrified of one of those colors in the dream and woke up shaken. That is how silly our judgments can be.
About music. It isn't actually suggested that one listens to music while meditating. The aim isn't to create surroundings that bring inner peace but to change what is inside of us to bring inner peace. So we don't want to develop an attachment or a crutch by using music. But that is a Buddhist perspective and meditation isn't just for Buddhists.

      Thanks for your advice!

Hmm I'm interested in Buddhism, actually, and share a lot of its views and philosophies. (The whole "live and let live" mentality, for one)

I do find that music helps me relax, however. Last night I couldn't sleep (I was actually afraid of falling asleep consciously and having the hallucinations), so I turned on my in-bed radio, very very softly, tuned into the classical channel. That would have been great, if they weren't having Jazz Night Programs. Jazz can get very eery, with subtle undertones and it uses noises from daily life (like scratching etc). I just lay there, wondering if these were hallucinations or not, and that actually lulled me to sleep XD

I woke up 2 hours later because my arm was sleeping and I had to pee, so I turned off my radio when I got back and went off to a peaceful sleep ^^

..I dreamed about ponies, but that's probably because I'd seen an old (I mean OLD) episode of My Little Pony last night XD

      I was afraid to meditate, because when I do, I tend to fall asleep while meditating and have these epic adventures in my dreams and wake up even more tired than when I went to bed ^^;;

If you deny they're existence, they cannot exist.

      Let's not get existential here

just kidding. I had an accidental WILD the other night, and did what you describe above. I also had music playing in the background and I think that kinda silenced the audio-hallucinations. I only experienced visible ones and they weren't all that bad, I just watched them go by as if I was watching a movie. I knew what they were this time, so I could just let them be. I had my first induced lucid that night

Congratulations. I'm glad this helped you more than it's helped me. Well actually there are plenty of reasons it hasn't help me but that is beside the point.

yeah, just be confident that it is not real, repeat it to yourself
remember it is scientifically proven that you are supposed to have such hallucinations, lol.
If you hear it again, remember you posted about it in the LD forum, because it surely wasnt real
there is no way you would be harmed, so do not fear
Idk what else to tell, laugh at the fact that a mysterious voice i saying "candy" which doesnt make any sense, lol

      Edit:

WHY do I still fear them even though I know they're peanuts now!? I've EXPERIENCED them last week, I was fine!! Grrr..

MLP: I grew up with My Little Pony, had the figurines and such, watched the film on tv (it's exactly as old as I am haha), so the "old" episodes are still my favourites, although I love FiM too, it's really cute, and it has morals
