Control what programmes start up when i turn on my computer?

For example, i have two messenger programmes and they both start up when i turn on my computer, and it really slows things down.

I'm sure there's a way to turn off what programmes start up but i've forgotten where it is.

I know it sounds like a completely stupid question, but there you go.

msconfig is the best way. Press Windows Key+R and type in 'msconfig' then press OK. You should get something like this:

(Make sure you are on the "startup" tab, as that&#39;s where you change these things).

This is the best way to get things to stop loading on startup - of course, there is the Startup folder in the start menu too you can take a look at. Simply check off the box of anything you no longer want to run; but make sure you leave on what is necessary for your computer to run (e.g. I would not check off "Windows"). You can see where I have stopped some programs I also dislike from running.

Next time you reboot msconfig will load again saying that it was used last time. Just uncheck the box that says "load msconfig on startup" and it will not appear anymore.

There&#39;s also usually an option in the program itself you can turn off, especially if it&#39;s a messenger program. Check preferences or options.

AOL is my ISP, solely because they are very cheap (flat-line rates hooray) and nobody else provides a service like that here.

If it wasn&#39;t for their horrible, horrible, sucky piece of crap client, I might actually bring myself to liking them.

Hey Kaniaz, thanks for the help. I didn&#39;t realise how many programmes were actually starting up without me realising it...i thought it was just the ones i could see.

I checked off most of them, except for ones saying &#39;windows&#39; but most of the stuff was software, so i stopped it running, stuff like nero and messenger.

It doesn&#39;t seem so laggy this morning.
