In the sleep laboratory during REM sleep, the
patient suddenly exhibited explosive running movements,
followed by an arousal. The patient’s actions again clearly
corresponded to what he was dreaming about at the time of
the observed behaviors. Boeve et al. (1998, pp. 363–70) describe
a patient who, on one occasion, “held his wife’s head
in a headlock and, while moving his legs as if running,
shouted: ‘I’m gonna make that touchdown!’ He then attempted
to throw her head down toward the foot of the bed.
When awakened, he recalled a dream in which he was running
for a touchdown, and he spiked the football in the end
zone.”
