      Placebo's Polynapping Journal

(Note: previous journal is here: Placebo's Hexaphasic Journal. I moved because I'm not 'hexaphasic' anymore)

      Some background
I've done uberman polyphasic sleep before (sleeping in only 6 naps a day of 23 minutes each) for a month.
That was a few years ago, and since then I've been trying a number of schedules. I've finally found one or two that fit my situation the best.

      Current Schedule
My current 'favourite' sleep schedule goes something like this:
      • Nap at 6am
      • Nap at midday
      • Nap at 6pm
      • Sleep from 11pm to 2am (roughly)
I find this to be the best flexibility versus efficiency - I can skip a nap once in a while, or move the naps a bit. I can also drink coffee and alcohol at certain times.

      General Polyphasic Sleep Info
For those who are new to the concept of polyphasic sleep or 'polynapping' (as I termed mine), here's some resources:

Firstly, I've not found any good polyphasic sleep forums apart from DreamViews (the others keep dying out)

Of other sites, most notably, is my own : Polynapping @ grelly.com
I created the napping mp3 that many of the polyphasic world uses to get a good nap.

      Other notable sites:
Polyphasic Google Group. Active google group for polyphasic sleep.
Wikipedia article. Article on polyphasic sleep
PolyphasicSleep.De. Has a lot of useful information on the subject
Steve Pavlina's Self Development site. He was largely responsible for making polyphasic sleep popular

      Other polyphasic blogs:
      Brendan
      Harry

Now for an update. I've had quite a bumpy ride the last week because of being diagnosed with hypothyroidism and undergoing some nasty side effects to the medication.
      Hopefully they are temporary.
More information on hypothyroidism, bipolar and polyphasic sleep on my site <here>

Tonight is the first night in the last few days that I've managed to get back on my schedule.
The mood swing the medication gave me left me drained and physically depressed.

I want to go uberman to prove that I can do it! And so that I can have SO much more time at university. Me and my friend tried and failed...

      Go go uberman!

      Much delayed update:

Due to the problems I had with hypothyroidism + medication interaction, I've been monophasic for about 2 weeks now.
This is just until we can establish where the problem is - the doctor suspects that one of my other supplements are causing the problem when taken with thyroid hormones.

I'm becoming increasingly impatient with being so slothful.
There's just not enough time for anything, despite putting my game developing on hold.
The little bit of time I do get has been going into reading Harry Potter and Spud, or learning ZBrush 3 (awesome 3D modeller/designer)

My wife has now got a part time job, and is considering doing some polyphasic sleep with me.
That'd be great, but she'll need some motivation I think.

I've had a thyroid deficiency as well, but I've never worried about it like you do. I just avoid calcium when taking levothyroxine and space it between meals. After almost a year of trying Dymaxion and not getting it to work, I'm going for Everyman, I think.

I hear you - I wouldn't be this pedantic about it either, if I hadn't just gone through a rough patch.
I just took the pills, nodded at the doctor and didn't look back.
Until I started feeling like a pregnant middle aged woman.

If you don't have any issues - then there's nothing to worry about

Quick questions. How long would it take for anyone to adjust to a major shift like this in their sleeping pattern. Unless you work graveyards you've slept the same patter for most of you life. Then all of the sudden change to this pattern. Can that be bad or just even really hard to adjust to? Does this pattern help for lucidity or are you using it for a different purpose? Thanks!

FFS... I just wrote a long reply, and then the page refreshed for no reason... grr.
      Let's try again..

Yes, it takes quite an adjustment. Uberman takes at least a week of physical suffering, followed by a week or two of psychological adjustment.
During this time, you're sleep deprived and your immune system is lowered.
The goal is to get adjusted as soon as possible as long term sleep deprivation can be lethal.

I started being polyphasic as an experiment, with the hope of 'regaining my life'. I felt like I was in a rut, going to work, coming home, eating, sleeping. Never getting time for the things that really were important to me - I'm a guy with a lot of interests and ideas.

Nowadays, I do it primarily to get more time for my interests.
But when properly adjusted, I can have a WILD with a high degree of success. Considering that I nap all the time, that's pretty cool
Unfortunately I prefer DILD's. My WILD's always feel a bit weak.
