What is the recommended amount of sleep in your state or country?
Here in Victoria, Australia it is 10 hours until you reach university age, in which it is 8-9.

'bout the same here in northeastern U.S. I get 8-10 a night.
Some people who are "hard-working" people get only 5-6 hours of sleep a night. These people drink a lot of coffee/caffeine and ruin everyone else's buzz.
What I've learned from my studies in psychology is that the amount of sleep is not nearly as important as the consistancy. One can survive on 4 hours of sleep a night as long as its consistant and they are spending a decent amount of time in REM.
(Things that can lower REM time: Caffeine, really high sugar intake, alcohol, nicotine, THC, and too much acute exercise. All of these things seem to be an American past time, sadly. )
Yeah, here in the U.S, the average 'just right' sleep time is about 8 hours. I find that I function best with about 8.5 hours. However, the right sleeping time for everyone is different.

another thing is that the bigger in mass you are the more sleep you need the smaller in mass you are the less sleep you need

Here in the good old US of A everyone regards 8 hours as a full night of sleep. I try to get 7-8, but anything more than 8 leaves me tired all day and I consider it wasteful.
Heh I find how much sleep I require correlates directly to when its happening. For instance. If I go to bed between 10pm and midnight I am going to require 10-11 hours. If I go to bed between 11am and noon I will require 6-7 hours. What DO I do? I go to bed at 2am and get up at 10am. That's 8 hours right there...

As far as I was aware, the reccomended starts at about 10 (for toddlers) and will decrease as you get older. Which is kind of a reason why old people wake up so early in the morning.
I can go for a few days without sleep, but when I do sleep (sleep deprived or not), I sleep like a rock for about 12 hours. So I avoid it.
Also, you might like to read Why Do We Sleep? from good old Cecil, which has some very interesting tales on people that survived without sleep at all, and if we eat spiders - well, probably not, but that's always haunted you since you were eight, surely?
It takes me a long freaking time to fall asleep and when I do I can't even process correctly until I've had a good 9-10 hours, despite the fact that I am of "University age." Both waking up and falling asleep are very slow processes for me so as far as lying in bed goes I'll spend a good 11 hours, but only be asleep for 9. I woke up like a half hour ago and I still feel pretty groggy, it'll go away in about 25 minutes though.
DoomedOne.... I know how that feels, especially when you wake up in the middle of the night to try a WILD, find that the WILD doesn't suceed and not get to sleep for 3 hours!(Happened to me twice... I think I might just take it out on you Kaniaz... I'll have my revenge!)

And the old people go to sleep at 1:00 AM lol!
I find to sleep well i have to have a minimum of six hours, and a maximum of eight. Eight being the better bet.
Also, the more tired i am, the longer i will sleep if i get given the chance. For example, doing three early shifts back to back knackers me out. If i then get a late shift at the end of this run, or a day off, i'll sleep way past my usual time.
If i've had good consistent sleep of about eight hours for a week, i sometimes find myself waking up VERY early. Like five am, when the sun comes up.
This morning, i didn't wake till my phone rang at six thirty. If it hadn't been for that, i don't think i'd have woken till much later.

Perhaps it is related to waking up in the N-REM state or something?
Maybe if you have too many REM sleeps, it just does N-REM until you wake up, but then again, that is just me, and I like making theories!
Don't forget polyphasic sleepers though. They only get like 2-4 hours of sleep a day and they're healthy.
For teens in America I think it is about 9.25 hours of sleep, but if you get more than 8.5 hours, it is considered pretty good.
