Thread: strange first lucid dream

I was dreaming last night and I was sitting in a classroom with a bunch of kids. I can not recall any of the kids faces, I just know i was sitting at a table with people around me. All of a sudden someone put something infront of me, I went to grab it with my hands and I said out loud "That couldnt be there, I have to be dreaming!" All of a sudden everything became extremely bright. Sort of like everything was glowing white and came into focus perfectly. I stood up out of my chair and looked around and the kids in the classroom, everything still glowing with a white tint, I looked at each person and knew who they were. Most of them where people I know in person. I felt like I had some sort of power almost and began running around the room extremely fast. The next thing I know I woke up..I have a few questions about this. Would this be considered a lucid dream? Since I did not do a reality check, does that mean I can still have a lucid dream and controll my dream to a certain extention? any thoughts or help would mean alot.

If you knew you were dreaming, then it was a lucid dream, period. Congratulations!

Reality checks are not the only way to become lucid -- in fact, the only thing that RCs do for me is to confirm that I am indeed dreaming when I'm already pretty sure that I am.

If you haven't already (or if you need a refresher), I highly suggest you check out the Tutorials section -- particularly the MILD and WBTB tutorials. These methods, used in combination, work very well for me and a lot of others -- no reality checks required!

It's pretty common for your first lucid dream to be short. Most people tend to get excited when they first realize that they're dreaming, and that leads to waking up quickly. So don't get discouraged -- you've accomplished a big goal; becoming lucid. Now that you know what it feels like, it should be somewhat easier to repeat, and then you can work on remaining calm to prolong the dream, and exerting control over your dream.

I could tell that I got very excited when I realized I was dreaming. Is that common though for my vision to change? Or when you have a lucid dream do you dreams "appear" different? Im just wondering.

Speaking personally, I've never noticed any change in my vision, or the brightness or clarity of my surroundings upon becoming lucid. However I've read posts from a number of other members who describe exactly that phenomenon. So I would say that's one of those things that varies from person to person.

I've never noticed any change in my surroundings, either, except for one time, which was (coincidentally) last night. I didn't have a proper lucid dream, though; just a moment when I realized I was dreaming. My surroundings seemed extremely detailed to me at that point. Too bad I managed to fade out of lucidity before I had much time to do anything about it. Oh, well, there's always tonight.

I did kinda of the same thing now that I think about it... the detail I saw was amazing. Almost like an lsd or extacy experience. I too faded out of lucidity..

I'm one of those people who experiences a change in my visual surroundings upon becoming lucid. Usually my dreams are pretty fuzzy and I can't see anything too clearly, but when I become lucid everything becomes much clearer, like a carbon copy of reality, and they're often brighter too. For me, one of the telltale signs that a lucid dream is fading is that I'll see everything become darker and fuzzier again.

Do they lucid dreams never last very long? Or is there a way to make them last long periods of time....

Staying calm helps a lot. And, very importantly, DO NOT EXPECT THE DREAM TO END QUICKLY. I did that on my second lucid, because the first ended so quick. All it got me was a false awakening and very rapid loss of lucidity.

Well that was my first and only lucid dream so far. So for future times, I will keep that in mind. thank you.
