The way I have understood WILD is that you are supposed to fall asleep like normal, but also be a kind of "passive observer" of what you experience while falling asleep.
You might see random shapes, hear sounds etc, and you are supposed to notice them without trying to become too involved.
Actually, this thing is explained very well in Tim Post's video "Advanced Lucid Dreaming: part 8" and the videos after that on YouTube.
He even simulates the visual and auditory hallucinations in that video, which is really cool and kind of innovative.
Make sure to check out all of his videos as well, he is an educated expert in lucid dreaming and is just as serious and likeable as Stephen LaBerge.
