It takes experience and time to be able to learn how to navigate middle of the night wakings, recalling and journaling dreams, and falling back asleep.
There is no question but that noticing wakings (naturally, alarms are discouraged) more throughout the night gives you more chances to recall the recent dreams, performa a technique like MILD, and increase chances for a LD in the following sleep cycle.
Lucid dreaming is all about becoming deeply familiar with the process of sleeping and dreaming. Give it time, keep careful records, and you'll figure out what works best for you. It's a lifetime practice, don't worry too much about occasional roadbumps, they're all part of the process.
