The first generation was definetely the best, and not all of the pokes after the first generation are so bad. I think I'll have to agree about 3rd gen being the most boring.
What kills me is every game is the same damn thing over and over again.

Walk into tall grass.
Talk to proffessor.
Get pokemon from proffessor to go deliver/retrieve something for him.
Pokemon becomes attatched to you, you keep pokemon.
Rival also keeps pokemon.
Battle rival.
Go catch and train lots of pokemon/Beat all the gym leaders.
Beat Elite Four.
Catch the rest of the pokemon.

It's just the same damn game over and over with different (yet similar) antagonists and new pokemans.

However, with the release of Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, competitive battling over wifi is quite fun.

I can't wait for Heart Gold and Soul Silver to come out so I can download the ROM buy it too, the original Gold and Silver were the best pokemon games in my opinion.

...do differ a little from game to game. I forget how G/S/C start, but R/S/E start you off with saving Prof. Birch from an angry Poochyena, and later you get to keep whichever PKMN you picked to save him. D/P/PL start you with going to Verity Lake with you BF/rival to find the Red Gyrados talked about on TV. Yeah, you battle the wild PKMN, but you get your starter from the briefcase left behind by Prof. Rowan and Lucas. You also battle your BF/rival much later in the Sinnoh games than the others.

You probably know all that, but I'm just saying.

I do agree there. I still regret starting over my Silver. Now all they need to do is do proper remakes of the original 3 and Crystal, then I'll be happy.
