Thread: Mentos And Cola

Okay, so today I was inspired by the ad for Mythbusters next week, where they try mentos in cola, to try it myself. It was so awesome. The only bad thing was that the explosion was that I expected the explosion to take a few seconds, like vinegar and baking soda, and that i would have time to put the bottle in my mouth, and recieve a jet powered treat, but instead it instantly exploded, and wasted most of my $1.50 coke bottle and wet my remaining mentos, rendering them useless, and got all over my pants and legs. Luckily, I was wearing a bathing suit and sandals, and did it outside (right outside the neighborhood pool), so I just went swimming and washed it off.

It looked kinda like this (but not as high, and with regular, not diet coke:

my family stockpiles diet coke in case of a nuclear fallout, so one day i figured I'd take a bottle and try it out. I had to buy the mentos which was a bummer, but man! I almost got sprayed in the face because I was caught off guard trying to stuff as much ground-up mento as I could in there. It sprayed to about my height, then there was a few smaller risers and it stopped. And then the bottle was no good anymore. It was still worth it though. Maybe I'll try doing it in someone's car next time!

That would be a good way to get yourself on someone's hitlist...

But I'd give 10 bucks to see it (and that person's reaction) on video. I think it would be something like this:

I have never done it with coke and mentos, however...
I am currently conducting an experiment involving baking soda, vinegar, and two sealed two liter bottles. The last test in this experiement resulted in one of my valves in the setup [only approved for aquarium use...heh] failing catastrophically and vinegar/baking soda going EVERYWHERE... it makes considerable pressure inside the bottle... the force it broke with was astounding... I think the soda bottles can hold it, as on mythbusters you can observe that their 3 liter bottles in the "Bottle Rocket Blast Off" myth held up to 150 PSI.... I've read online of 2 liter bottles easily withstanding 100 PSI, IDK how much force I've got, id wager not close to that BUT... I have wrapped the bottles in duct tape... just in case. Doing this prevents shrapnel... as the plastic will stay attached to the duct tape... Currently I am trying to beef up the connections... I hope to try again later hehe

Edit: I was gonna post the setup of the experiment... but I thought it might be kind of dangerous and I don't wanna be irresponsible...

Just post it with a disclaimer saying you're not responsible if we get ourselves killed...blah, blah, blah. That solves everything. It can't be worse and more destructive than the crap you can find on google in a matter of seconds. It's freakin' scary, you can find how to make drugs and bombs within 2 minutes. I don't do it though, I am above that. I am not going to risk arrest and injury to myself and others making a pipe bomb or something. Anyways back to the point, please post it, it could be interesting to see. Just informationally.

Also, can you post your, I haven't tried it with the above format, as I want everyones vote, and i can't add/edit questions after the post has been created , and I want a full sample, not only the people who have, as I know less than half of people actually tried it.

Oh... the glue is almost dry... soon I will conduct the third experiment. You shall hear about it tonight!

Well... that was pretty lame... it lacked the pressure to explode a rubber glove... weak... I threw a kebab skewer at the glove and it popped... wow heh... oh well

There&#39;s another good video out on the net where a bunch of guys (with nothing better to do) place dry ice in soda bottles and then (carefully) tossed them into the street.





There was shrapnel.

yea ive done the mentos cola thing before ....my parents thought it was the most amazing thing,and it was pretty cool. I wonder what would happen if someone drank some diet coke and then ate some mentos ?

Nothing, the stuff in your stomach neutralizes it or somthing, though I&#39;ve seen people do it in their mouths, and that looks pretty cool.

Anyways, I found this really cool, awesome video of these dudes making a coreographed (sp?) show with over 100 two liter bottles of diet coke, and over 500 mentos. Here it is:

After seeing so much mentos and cola videos over the internet in the last couple days, I decided I had to try it with Diet Coke 2 liter bottles, so I biked to the local convenience store and bought two 2 liter bottles of diet coke and a pack of mentos (total: about &#036;4.25, coke &#036;1.69/bottle, mentos: rest of money minus 5% tax), put it in a plastic bag, and started biking home. It was a miserable failure. First on the way home, the bag broke and the mentos and coke fell out, but I didn&#39;t notice it until the second coke bottle fell out, as when this one fell the side popped a bit, making noise and causing most of the fizz and about a fifth of the coke to come out. Then I had to bike back and look for the other bottle adn the mentos, but I only found the mentos on the ground. Luckily this woman who I passed while getting the mentos found the other coke bottle for me, which was unharmed. After getting everything bagged I decided I&#39;d first get rid of the rest of the broken bottle right there, which by putting 3 mentos in the bottle, It did quite well, considering the fizz lack, leaving only about a quarter of the bottle, but compared to what would happen if all the fizz was still there, it was lame. Then I biked to this field near my house, and tried to do the thing where you put mentos, wrapped in paper, in the bottle and cap it. Then shake it for a while and throw it against the ground. The problem is I had no paper, so I just put the rest of the tube of mentos in, and shook it up for a while and threw it against the ground, but nothing happened, so I shook some more and tried again. Nothing happened, so I tried again. And again. And again. Then I gave up and tried unscewing the cap on the ground so it jets up, but this failed too, as I couldn&#39;t unscrew it fast enough, and all I got was a weak spraying effect that disposed of very little soda. The reason; the wrapper is doesn&#39;t let the soda through very well, so most of the mentos did nothing. In the end I was left with a &#036;4.25 hole in my pocket, and just over a liter of minty cola.

So to recap:

Bad things
1. Both coke bottles were failures, &#036;4.25 down the drain
2. I had so much soda left (I don&#39;t really like diet coke)
3. Torture carrying the messy crap after the first exploded

Good things
1. The mentos made the cola minty
2. The old japanese person I passed found my coke bottle

They did the mentos and cola experiment on MythBusters. I didn&#39;t get to see the whole show, but I saw that they found that the CO2 was a factor in the exploding cola, but the actual cola had a lot to do with it - because they tried it was regular soda and it didn&#39;t explode like the cola did. I wish I could&#39;ve watched the end&#33;

Me and a few friends went into a field with 6 big bottles of some cheap imitation cola (diet) and loads of packets of polos (the only equivalent of mentos we could find). When we got the hang of it we got some pretty spectacular explosions... especially when we shoved two whole polo packets into one bottle and closed the lid. Eventually it exploded, ripping the side of the bottle in two.

Just get it off bittorrent if you missed the end. I taped it, so I didn&#39;t have to worry about that, sinse I was in florida last week, and didn&#39;t have a chance to watch it.

Fun
