Eggplants were named after the variety of the plant that is colored and shaped like a chicken egg. Hamburgers are called such because they're named after the city of Hamburg. A boxing ring is called such because before actual "rings" were built, people formed a ring around the two people as they fought. Pineapple gets its name because it resembles a pinecone. English muffins are called such because in England they are just "muffins", it's like calling it "American football" to prevent confusing. Most of these are just idiomatic phrases or just picking at the couple irregular forms of verbs/plurals. The English language is pretty straight-forward in all aspects aside from spelling.

Also, "indices" is a proper plural form.
