      Hawking and the Big Bang

Apparently according to the following forum he said there was no God.

Steven Hawking, a drooling idiot, proves that God hates cripples! - The Landover Baptist Church Forums

Yes, I find the posts... hard to believe. There are many things I want to discuss in this thread. First off, Mr. Hawking, quote:

LONDON - God did not create the universe and the "Big Bang" was an inevitable consequence of the laws of physics, the eminent British theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking argues in a new book.

No one's going to argue that inevitable consequences are set forth by God? I dunno... possibly like everything else if such a being existed? I doubt I'd understand the physics but Hawkings seems a little short sighted here.

Second, what do you think about the attitude of those posters? What does the bible say about how sinners should be treated? Should they be despised and looked down upon (let he who cast the first stone...) Or should they be pitied, or whatever?

That's sheer awesomeness. But yeah, there are some people like that. Is the quote even real? I got to see.

Here's more info about what he said.

I believe he sees God as a being who directly orchestrates creation.

I read this story on the BBC.

It was a true facepalm moment when they said his quote from A Brief History of Time, "a Theory of Everything would allow us to know the mind of God", showed that he had previously believed in God.

...do these people really find the concept of metaphor utterly alien? :l

Well believe that if you want but it's not really what he or any of the articles say.

Yes, I find the posts... hard to believe. There are many things I want to discuss in this thread. First off, Mr. Hawking, quote:

You pasted my name and someone else's quote. Because of you, thousands of years from now, when they find the ruins of civilization and people will worship the prophet "Replicon", they will mis-quote me in their gospel, which will lead to wars and death. :p

      Hawking is agnostic. Hurr durr.

He believes that the universe allows for a God, he just hasn't seen him yet.

And the Landover Church is fake. It's a joke.

      Do some research.

I read his book, The Grand Design, a few weeks ago. 90% of it reads like a high school physics class to cater to the general population that may not know much about physics, then it delves into a little quantum spookiness. The last chapter is on the formation of space-time. The crux of his argument is that under extreme conditions like the Big Bang singularity, the dimension of time wraps itself up and begins to 'behave' like a 4th dimension of space. Theoretically this means that events can cause themselves, therefore the universe could have brought itself into existence without the need for any intelligence being behind it.
