      Hypocrisy at my Catholic School

I go to a catholic school(but there are a lot of non-catholics there as well) and because it's ash wednesday they decided to not sell meat in the cafeteria. What a load of crap.

Because some people aren't eating meat then the option is not available-it's extremely prejudice but even worse I had to have tuna instead of Chicken on my roll

While I was eating with my friends who are a mixture of christians and atheists I was asking what the difference was between eating meat and fish and they seemed to think that they had me beat by saying that fish live in the sea and animals don't(I don't think they got what I was saying) After thinking for a while I said that maybe it had something to do with a fish being the symbol of christianity and they all thought I was going mad and that the only symbol for it was the cross. I ended up going to talk to the most devout christians I know and even they didn't know it.

I can't believe they had the cheek to restrict my diet but don't even know their own symbol.

I can't wait 'til next year, I'm gonna take in a big steak and eat in front of all of them.

Obviously I know not all Christians are like that but I just didn't get how that was fair.

      Fish are animals. :V

If you meant mammals then there's quite a few of those which live in the sea.

yeah don't expect anything in the christian religion to make any sense or be fair at all.

You go to a Catholic school, what else to you expect of the rules? You think they'll celebrate Hannakuh or something?

      Be smarter than that.

Christianity is about faith and control of the masses, it doesn't have to make sense.

"they afford greater pleasure as food [than fish], and greater nourishment to the human body, so that from their consumption there results a greater surplus available for seminal matter, which when abundant becomes a great incentive to lust." - Thomas Aquinas

so basically, meat makes you feel good....so its bad.

I too, went to a catholic school for many years . Fortunately, it was a very liberal catholic school and except for a bible class here and there they didnt really force anything on us.

Haha yeah I remember they did that in my highschool too. And every goddamn Friday of Lent. My parents expected me to adhere to that rubbish as well, so I had to sneak deli meat out of the fridge and make my own lunch.

At least you get fish! Though I guess it doesn't make much of a difference if you don't like it...

I went to Catholic school too and yeah the whole fish vs meat did not make any sense to me either. (Though at my high school, the alternative was cheese pizza from Domino’s!)

However, the school restricts what the school sells because the school is trying to promote a Catholic lifestyle. This includes no meat on certain days of the year. (One of my elem. school principals actually confiscated lunches which had the forbidden food.) LOL. Anyway, they want to uphold all of the Catholic traditions, and since you go to their school, you agree to take part in those traditions (or at least not complain too much)

As for the fish… I did not know the fish was another symbol for Christianity until after I was out of high school (and saw a bumper sticker ). Technically, for Catholics and certain other Christian religions, the cross is the only recognized symbol. The fish kind of died out for most groups, especially when the Darwinians altered it. However, it is still used by the Christian groups who do not want to use the cross because of its earlier Pagan use.

Invisible man, I don't mind celebrating it, I went to a half hour mass and didn't moan about it and the only reason I go there is because it is the closest school.

I'm not gonna start walking several more miles to go to another school.

Plus I was more annoyed about the fact that I knew more than they did and the fact that loads of them said how would you know, you're an atheist.

From what I understand, the fish was to safely identify if one person was a Christian or not. This has symbolic value because the Apostiles were supposed to be 'fishers of men.' This was back when Christianity wasn't the most popular religion in the world. They are right in saying the cross is the 'main symbol' of Christianity, although you're correct in saying other symbols are used in Christianity.

Also, they see you as being biased against their religion because of your decision to be an atheist. Yes it is unfair that they assume you know nothing, although (again) it shouldn't be too surprising for you.

They might be total jerks too, I wouldn't be surprised. Being Lutheran, I recognize that it's not the teachings of Jesus that are wrong, but sometimes how people act upon them are. If you feel like Real Life Trolling them, pretend to convert to a Lutheran and stamp 99 complaints on their front door. Then do the steak thing.

-off topic-: Love your last LD goal.

It doesn't count as murder if the animal is ugly and/or slimy.

A joke? Or are you actually serious? Hard to tell.
Hard to tell a cynical joke from a seriously hypocritical principle cause too many people use that kind of "reason" and actually mean it.

I never quite understood "vegetarians" that are okay with eating fish.
Never heard of ash sunday before. What's the symbology behind refraining from meat on that day?

Don't think I'd have a problem on your school hawhee, cause I just loooooove fish. Especially Tuna.

Not all vegetarians are vegetarians for religious or philosophical/moral reasons. Some do it for the health benefits alone - eating fish serves as a way of nutritionally rounding out the diet without resorting to red meat or poultry.

Yeah that would actually make sense alot more.
But I know many vegetarians that will say: "Meat is murder... and and and... It's unhealthy... so so so... I eat fish only"

I never had much trouble understanding people that refrained from meat for health reasons, allthough I personally never experienced meat to make me sick or unhealthy.
All I'm aware of that Meat CAN be extremely dangerious, but ONLY if you aren't carefull about handling uncooked meat.

Now what is ash sunday and why don't Catholics eat meat on that day? Anyone?

I'm a vegetarian and this shit confuses the hell out of me. Some people do it for health reasons, but other people, like my ex-girlfriend, are just crazy. She was a vegetarian because she didn't want to kill animals, but she didn't apply this to fish. She even tried to get me to eat fish because she said I was to skinny and need protein. True enough, but fish smells like shit. If I eat any animals again it's gonna be BEEF; steak's the only meat I ever miss.

Was with another girl once who would only eat chicken. I don't know how they do it, the texture of meat is the whole reason I stopped eating it. It just evokes flesh, and eating flesh seems strange to me.

It's ash Wednesday. There's also palm Sunday and Easter, but those are the only holy days in lent that land on Sunday.

They don't eat meat because they are fasting and when you fast you aren't supposed to eat meat. Except the magic fish meat, that doesn't count.

Actually, when you fast you son't eat anything. Lent is simply a less extreme version of that.

This reminds me of when we went to Spain and some people in my class were vegetarian... So they gave them chicken. Because chicken isn't meat.

Yeah, I've run into that. Why do some vegetarians say it's okay to eat chicken and fish? It makes no sense.

Fish die the worst deaths of all animals people eat. They get jerked out of their habitats by hooks in their mouths and suffocate to death. Imagine taking a bite of a hamburger and suddenly getting a hook in your mouth, being jerked under water in a lake, and drowning to death.
      You are dreaming right now.
