Of course, that little matrix is ultimately as meaningless as any attempt by either 'side' to claim the middle ground. There are plenty of people who, on the basis of agnosticism and perhaps a degree of apathy, cannot come to a determination as to belief. Trying to force them to one side or the other of the vertical axis for purposes of categorization is meaningless, so the only term with any descriptive value for them is agnostic.
There are also those like myself with a gnostic neutrality toward belief--we have the means to know that both theism and atheism have equal truth potential, and are equally incomplete, being founded upon conceptualization. As such, we can be said to believe provisionally--a standpoint that looks like belief from the perspective of an atheist, and disbelief from the perspective of a theist.
