My goodness. Yes, the ones here are at least respectable people.
Being a Christian, I can safely say I sometimes regret the people who follow my God :(
Having been a Christian, I can say something similar. There are some people who have warped Christianity to something it really shouldn't be.
Just don't be too surprised if your posts on there are deleted. Happened to me.
(Where's that other thread about that forum gone?)
You've made two flaws:
- You resorted to insulting phrasing when arguing your point against the theists.
- You are now posting (speaking) about others behind their back.
It seems that both these things show that you are just what you argued against.
Both theists and atheists are the same: jumping to one extreme or the other on a topic that has no relevance to your life, no effect on it whatsoever aside from debating it with other people.
The only open-minded and truly wise approach to the matter of religion is not caring about it whatsoever.
Holy shit
...That looks like fun
I tried not to be insulting, I think the worst thing I said was the guy previously had torn up all their arguments, which was true. There were no ad hominem attacks.
As far as talking about them behind their backs, so what? Besides, I'm being complementary towards the theists here and not in a disparaging way. I am genuinely saying that the theists here are nicer and aren't stuck up their own asses, they present valid arguments that we can debate with.
It was funny, there was 10 pages of a "Christian" tearing them up and saying things much more condescending than I said, but since he was labeled a christian they were extremely nice and polite. I go in and don't say anything half as insulting but since I wasn't a christian they tore me up.
Kind of funny really.
Being an atheist, I can safely say that you did a very poor job of evangelizing our viewpoint :(
Jesus has some very good lessons to teach (as do many religious figures). But one doesn't need a church to realize them.
In many cases, the establishments can hinder the true purpose of the religion. My favorite paradigm of this is the various "Holy" wars.
I also have good lessons and a great bank of things to say. Most intelligent people do.
Now I want a church :(!
:-P
Being a nihilist, I can safely say that none of this matters and that arguing is pointless :(
I'm trying to get some sort of reply to my position. Up to this point, all my "interventions" have ended in nothing being replied in the end or in some sort of stalemate (the kind caused by lack of understanding, rather than lack of arguments that lead to stalemates between theists and atheists). Not sure if that means that my position is infallible or if others just don't understand it but that sparks curiosity, leading me to inject my position into more threads here.
Besides, things that have real meaning to me I'm patient enough to keep to myself. So, aye, this is out of curiosity and a bit of boredom, I suppose.
I'm not affected by religion. I'm affected by these debates. And I never said I don't care about other people. I simply don't care about the existence of a god.
Haha your last post was awsome and so true doesnt look like they had a comeback to that.
I wasn't implying that you said that you didn't care about other people; I don't think that and I understand what you are saying.
You, in this very minor way, are being effected by religion, just because people around you are arguing about it. If people were physically fighting, you would be even more effected, right? That is actually happening in some places. In addition, laws are passed based on religious viewpoints, which effect other people. I don't know where you are, so I don't know if or how you are actually escaping some sort of religious effect on your life.
I am just trying to show you that religion effects everyone. Even you, who claims not to care, disproves what you say by being annoyed (or whatever feeling you are having) by the debates. I realize this is minor, and maybe if the arguing went away, you would actually cease to be effected by religion, but I doubt it, and the reason no one is joining your outlook as you complained above is that it is obvious to most people how much religion effects their lives.
This is not to say that anything that annoys other people is worthy of argued about. Just the things that threaten peoples lives, oppress them, etc.--like religion.
But I'm not annoyed and I don't feel any feelings about the debates.
Like I said, and I'm not lying or twisting the truth, I'm just trying to get a reply to my position, out of sheer curiosity.
I started doing this actively literally just a day or two ago because of the huge amounts of R/S threads that suddenly arose. Apparently more than usual or perhaps I just incidentally ran across them (but they're still flooding the "Today's Posts" search consistently as far as I can see). They captured my attention and my curiosity after I read through them.
I'm curious about the mind frames of those arguing/debating here, that's all. Introspection, mental analysis and all such are things I'm well versed in. Hence, this "attempt" of mine.
