[/b] See, this is another reason why I doubt god, I always wondered why god couldn't just say something in my head to me, if he is all powerful he certainly should beable to do that, I mean bwick once said (Ithink it was him) that we lost the ability but god should still beable to do so, because he is all powerful.

Do you REALISE how silly that idea is? Atheism can exist quite comfortably without religion, but religion NEEDS atheism. So the question you need to ask yourself, if you believe in a "God", is why would a God create a world in which people NEED to be atheists to allow other people to be religious? It's ludicrous. [/b] No. I agree with this. How can you love god when your only reason for doing so is to get to heaven? Consider how many demonstrations there would be if the U.S. government told us that if we did not support them with our words, we would be thrown in jail. Everyone would 'love' the government, and many of them would believe that they loved the government, even though they don't. In order to truly love him, man needs to have the choice not to. If man KNEW that not doing so would end in his ultimate demise, survival instinct itself would guide him to think he loved god purely out of fear. Not out of love. This is my opinion of the way things seem to most likely be, having the knowlege I have about this reality. It is not fact. -sloth

I believe there may or may not be gods existing. But yes, I'm an Atheist; Given that the perceived likelihood of said gods is so exceedingly low, this is the only logical position to take until sufficient evidence to the contrary is found.

[/b] I personally believe the organized religions caused there to be more order, and that there would have been far more deaths if there had been no organized religions. The crusades, jihads, etc. are just a result of individuals seeking to increase their own power, or because of hate, not because of the religions themselves. I can't say for sure there would be more deaths if there had been no organized religions, as this really is just speculating, but most likely I believe it would, as lots of morals and ethics come from religions.

[/b] Morals and ethics come from people, who also happened to have made up religion, which is how the morals and ethics got into religion. Not the other way around.

Religion is not wisdom. Not only have hundreds of millions been slaughtered, but also countless cultures and their wisdom have been eradicated from off hte face of the earth because of it. Where talking about a hundred thousand years of human evolution in gathering wisdom/understanding gone in within decades. The early Christians are responsible for quite allot of those cultures/wisdoms destructions, up until the Native American cultures. Thats two thousand years of destruction and torture in name of Christianity...alone! Hum...

Yep. I mean, how could it be that something infinitely powerful and totally... just kidding. I think that particular conversation has gone about as far as it can go in this forum. A lot of religions involve gods that are just EXTREMELY far fetched, but the Judeo-Christian-Muslim God, in all of his various names, is an especially bizarre concept because the notions about his nature contradict each other and he has every personality disorder I know of. Zeus, Poseidon, Vishnu, Osiris, and the others are just in a boat with the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny. Is there a word for people who don't believe in those?

I wasn't really referring to one specific person in the thread. The overall tone just seems to be that of condemning Christianity (and theism in general) for its condemning attitude. I just find that delightfully ironic. It's an unwise move diplomatically and logically to imperiously decry something or someone else for being "disrespectful." Also, Jesus' teachings (and some other religious texts) are much more respectful than this thread in one important aspect: I didn't hear Jesus calling anyone superstitious morons. He just called them wrong. At the very worst, he accused them of being chronically and terminally wrong. Which, again, was merely his honest opinion based on the fact that he disagreed with them. "Respect" doesn't mean "to agree with unquestioningly." If it did, we would all be completely devoid of respect, simply by disagreeing with ANY worldview. "Respect" in the sense that we mean it, I assume, is to respect the intelligence and integrity of those who reasonably seek their own path, even if we disagree with their principles or ideologies. Any other definition, and we shoot ourselves in the foot logically. You can't really blame a religion (which isn't an entity in itself) for the violence perpetrated by its followers. And you can't blame all of a religion's followers for the injustice perpetrated by a few. Most Christians are relatively harmless and haven't started any wars or massacres. Anyway, I don't mean to hijack the thread (I understand the thread is titled Atheism, and so my opinion is not quite relevant), so allow me to bow out once again and invite anyone who wishes to talk with me or yell at me to do so via PM. Just because option A is bad (from your point of view), doesn't mean option B will be better by default. Option A is a World with religion, and B without, obviously.
