Religion is a big part of our culture. Whether or not it is desirable anymore, it helped shape the morals of our society. So, I understand you're an convinced atheist. You have the right to that opinion. Most of us, however, do not need to use gratuitous swearing to get a point across. Lay off it.

Look you can't just take everyones perception of god and group it into one category. Anyone can go out and find essays on god. Proving or disproving, countering or advocating. Can you explain those essays for me? Not everyone has a conception of god that can be disproved by those essays. Basically you are only looking at the religious picture of god. Specifically the christian idea of god, and not even the spiritual/metaphysical idea of god.

I think this person is very frustrated with the current goings on of what we see in the media , uproars over silly mohommud comics , terrorist attacks in the name of God and other things like that . But i think as you have said , it come down to the individual and how they interpret it . If you take everything that a 2000+ year old text says , to be true then you will be a very extremist type person . These text were born out of VERY extreme times , and such extreme times called for extreme measures , whether they were the right thing to do at the time is another thing . I wont deny that the religion i was brought up to believe in was founded on blood shed , the crusades . I think it is when religion and power are mixed that you get very potent and destructive consequences . Take for example a pope who is supposed to be the closest one to God . For him to declare a holy war that was supposedly commanded of him by God is absolutely stupid . Anyone can see it is simply him using his power and position to carry out HIS OWN will , not Gods .

In many ways , yes , religion and the thought of God can be the most destructive thing in a civilisation . Look at the Mayans , who used to offer virgin women as sacrifices to their God . Why God would even want man to do this is beyond me , but when man interprets the supposed word of God , he can take things out of context and thus , can be very destructive in Gods name .

I think for someone to have their own personal beliefs is okay , but as soon as they start making those beliefs public and start preaching , that is when it has the potential to be destructive .

Wow , i never thought i would hear you say that Leo , though you are only human like the rest of us . I am interested to hear about some of the proven and documented saints you speak of Leo . Can you be sure that they are PROVEN to be a tool of God ? It is hard to prove something beyond a doubt . As soon as man begins to document such things as this , that is when he starts to blow things out of proportion .

If i am a sick person , and am told by doctors i have 1 year before I die from an incurable disease and I pray to a saint , and the next day i am miraculously cured that doesnt PROVE that my praying to the saint cured me . It has been known for people with illnesses such as AIDS to be cured from it with no explaination . And if they didn't pray to a saint or God for it and it happened then why is there any reason to believe that when someone does pray and it happends that it was the higher power that cured them ?

I hope you can show this proof of supernatural saints , i really do , but i have my doubts as to the validity of such claims .

You often speak about atheism as if it was some organised religion itself, dedicated to hiding all the evidence about Gods and supernatural powers in general. I don't understand why. I consider myself to be an atheist, or agnostic at least, but I've never participated in any of those "campaigns of nullification" that you say atheists concieve. I believe most atheists don't really care about religions desperately trying to find proof of their God and would never even bother to hide any "evidence" those religions may find if they don't believe it. But if someone presented some serious proof of those Saints, or even the documentation you are talking about, and it was believable I really don't think they would try to cover it up and deny it's existence. For me that would not even make sense as it would mean I admit those things are or might be true and could no longer be an atheist...

Seeing what fanatical religions around me do and considering the fact that I've never seen a miracle or a "Saint" in my life, nor did any religion show me, I can't help myself but to keep being an atheist. Of course there are people defending atheism, just as there are people defending religions and just about any other belief. That is still not organisation. And today there is enough immediately available information for everyone to make their own opinion, even through the (not only atheistic) propaganda.

I'm sure Voltaire wasn't the first atheist and I don't see why his particular case has anything to do with me or atheism today. I'm still not covering up any evidence indicating that your or any other religion is true, and I still don't see why you think that I or other atheists do. Wouldn't that be quite a contradiction? Let's say I was presented evidence that your religion is the true and right one and believed it. Would I cover it up just to remain atheist? Why would I do that if I knew I'm going to end up punished in hell for it (or however it goes by your religion)? I would have to be a really malevolent bastard to do that, and I'd not even be a proper atheist anymore.

And still I can't think about your religion anything but what I think about all the others. You claim to have Saints and miracles as proof (just as any other religion...), but won't show them to atheists in fear that they would all deny it anyway. Yeah i hate to sound like a greek chorus Leo but im still waiting on that proof . If you have it , why go keeping it all to yourself , cough it up . I was a catholic all my life and was never presented with any proof which would hold up in court of the existance of saints being truly tools of the lord , well apart from those little medallion things they used to give you with a picture of the socalled saint on it , explaining how good they were and how people prayed to be healed to their already dead soul and they were healed .

If you call that proof then i would pray you dont become a judge of a supreme court , lest i be sentenced one day and have you as the judge of my life .
