Okay this is just a thought... and my first post ever! :D
Sorry in advance, if this sounds really stupid and unconventional...
Then again, what isn't?
Anyways!
If the moon effects the tides (water) and we are made up of about 70% percent of water, then would'nt the moon effect us in some way? Expecially if its a full moon?

If anyone cares to explain this to me, I'd be happy to hear your opinion on the matter. I would appreciate it emmensily.

I don't get on Dreamviews as much as I'd like, so it may take me a couple days to respond.

The tidal force comes from the difference in gravity from one part of a body being close to the source of gravity and the other part being farther away. It just so happens the the Earth is large enough that the force of the moon's gravity on the near side is noticeably stronger than on the far side (actually it's more complicated but that is the general idea).

But you're only about 5 or 6 feet tall, so the gravity at your feet is about the same as the gravity at your head. In fact, if anything, the tidal force of the Earth would be the one affecting you, not the moon. Now, if you were 1000 km tall, you would feel something.

So then the gravity would be strongest when it's closest, not necessarily when it's full. This may be an indication of two effects of the moon.

The effect of gravity and the effect of the sun's reflected light off the moon.

Maybe position of the Earth, Moon and Sun relative to each other all factor into the effect of lunar light. I'm pretty sure the position of the Earth to the Sun affects the effect of solar light and heat.

Which makes me wonder about effect the heat collected by the moon's surface may have. I hypothesize its effect is insignificant.

But the effect on water, I can't say. I think water may have some undiscovered properties. It's such a unique substance.

Compared to the light from the sun, the light of a full moon is tiny.

Light does actually exert a force but it has nowhere near the effect of gravitation.

Actually, during a full moon the sun, Earth and moon are roughly lined up, and that does increase the tidal force very slightly.

The moon effects the whole planet, not just water. Tidal forces effect the shape of the planet, its just that those effects are most visible over water because it is a fluid. The shape of the earth is actually ellipsoidal, not spherical, and this is because of the tidal force.

I thought it was because of the greater centripetal force required at the equator.

If there was a significantly stronger pull on one side of the Earth than the other, you'd expect an egg shape really (and catastrophic tectonic activity as a result of the rotation).

Actually, the tidal force causes oceans (and everything else) to bulge on both sides. Why? Because on the near side, the oceans feel stronger gravity than the ocean floor, so they bulge towards the moon (up). And on the far side, the ocean floor feels stronger gravity than the oceans, so the floor pulls away (down), leaving the ocean itself bulged up.

Ohhh okay. I could never find a good explanation of why there's two tides.

But yeah, the Earth is quite ellipsoid due to its rotation; however it is uniform. If the moon caused it, then the shape would be elliptical from a birdseye view... I'm thinking the thermal energy generated by the constant changing of the Earth's shape with its rotation would melt it. Isn't one of Jupiter's moon's similar?

The net result of this is that the Earth gets deformed into a slightly squashed, ellipsoidal shape due to these tidal forces. This happens because if we resolve the tidal forces at each point on the Earth into a local vertical and horizontal component, the horizontal components are not zero, and are directed towards the two points along the line connecting the Earth and the Moon's centers. These horizontal forces cause rock and water to feel a gravitational force which results in the flow of rock and water into the 'tidal bulges'. There will be exactly two of these bulges. At exactly the positions of the tidal bulges where the Moon is at the zenith and at the nadir positions, there are no horizontal tidal forces and the flow stops. The water gets piled up, and the only effect is to slightly lower the weight of the water along the vertical direction.

Another way of thinking about this is that the gravitational force of the Moon causes the Earth to accelerate slightly towards the Moon causing the water to get pulled towards the Moon faster than the solid rock on the side nearest the Moon. On the far side, the solid Earth 'leaves behind' some of the water which is not as strongly accelerated towards the Moon as the Earth is. This produces the bulge on the 'back side' of the Earth.

Xei, What I meant was isn't the earth and moon in weightless space? I realize that there are many other forces of gravity that are existant, but I did not think it was a relevant eough amount to make the earth oblong.

I'm not sure what you could mean by weightless space... we normally completely ignore space when talking about gravitation. Weight is a force of attraction between two masses. Space doesn't have mass. We're only considering the force of attraction between the Earth and the Moon.

I guess what I'm envisioning is the weightlessness that accompanies…. let’s say an astronaut in space. Their mass and weight do not have the same effects as it does in our atmosphere.

The only way to balance them is to shift the normal force, meaning the shape of the body changes to a more ellipsoidal shape.

From the outside perspective, the only way to get a cetripetal force pointing in is to have g and N not parallel, and this forces a bulged shape.

The moon's gravity affects everything on earth, and vise-versa, etc...

Since water covers 75% of the Earth's surface and is a liquid, this phenomenon is more easily observable there.

But yes, the moon pulls on you just as well.

The moon actually stabilizes earth's wobble. It's kind of like 2 people dosey-doeing (or however you spell it) their partner. If one let's go they will both fall over. Without the moon, the earth would go through extremely violent climate changes. It's actually very plausible to say that without the moon, life might not even exist on earth. Atleast not life as we know it. So to answer your question, sure, the moon does effect us. :P

In addition, I wanted to say that a full moon has no different effect on earth than a half moon for example. The light the moon gives off is just the moons position in relation to the sun and earth. Its gravitational pull does not change at all.

The earth spins because of the law of conservation of angular momentum and it was thrown off of the sun when it was forming. It does not wobble.

My viewpoint:
Let's take someone weighing 150 pounds. Approximately 70% water would be... 105 pounds of water? I have heard water as weighing 8.34 pounds per gallon, so using that number:

105 pounds / 8.34 = approximately 12.59 gallons.

Can we observe tides in swimming pools? Did the sports analysts watching the Beijing Olympics note the tidal phase when calculating the odds of an athlete breaking a swimming record?

The tidal force actually effects both sides of the planet. This is why high tide is both at noon and midnight. What happens is, the closest 3rd or so to the moon is pulled slightly more outwards than the majority of the planet, but the back 3rd is pulled slightly less than the majority of the planet which amounts to it bowing out in the opposite direction.

ye ive read it, so things probably would be different, but if the moon had never been there, then us humans would be fine because it would just be that way so we would have already learned to live that way, but if it were to dissappear now, then we would be stuffed. the changes we would have to make would be astronomical. this is if that article is correct.

It can also apparently be changed simply through exposure to the hormones of other females, manipulating that cycle regardless of the period of the moon. So if it does play a role, it's supposed to be one that can be over-ruled by other PMSing women :tongue: (like roommates/female family members getting their periods at the same time)

the last research I read actually suggested women started their month right before the new moon. and since ancient cultures back then were paying attention to the heavens, women knew what night they were going to start and so on

Certainly in urban enviroments at least, the moon will make no difference to us at all. On the rare occasions that we are outside at dark, all the street lighting and such completely dwarfs the moon's light.

What I've also been wondering is why does a month have 31/30/28 days?

A month obviously comes from the word moon. A moon cycle is 28 days. There's exactly 13 moon cycles in one year. 28x13 = 364, which is exactly how long a real year is.

So why do we make it so difficult and turn a year into 12 months, and make each cycle unsychronized with the moons cycle? I mean, nature is so perfectly logical and we go creating months that have 28 days one year, and 29 days the other year.. wtf? Some months are 30 days, others are 31 days? How does that make sense at all? And then we go add a day to a year, each 4 years? Why on earth are we going to all this trouble, if we could just have 13 months, with each 28 days, perfectly fitting into one year, perfectly matching the moon cycles?

We divide the year into 12 because 12 has many factors (we can easily split it into half a year, a quarter of a year, etcetera; same reason we have 12 hours); 13 has no factors.

And no, there are not 364 days in a year (:|), there are 365 and a quarter. That's why we have an extra day every four years; 365*3 + 366 / 365*4 = 365 + 1/4.

It not exactly a quarter, is it?

Which makes me wonder, will we eventually, after however many thousands of years, experience winter in June in the northern hemisphere?

It's not like anybody is counting that extra percentage after the quarter...are they?

The moon has no power actually, because its velocity is perpendicular to the centripetal gravitational force. ;)

And please don't use the argument from ignorance, which goes something like "well science doesn't know everything, so there are things we don't know about". This is an incredibly flawed argument, both because science is the only objective way to obtain knowledge, so to deny it would be paradoxical, and because you're making a very specific claim here. You specifically say that the object orbiting the Earth 'holds power over us'. To make a specific claim requires specific evidence. So let's hear it.

You say the same thing every time you make a post.

I'm not going to go over the same argument, science is not the only way to obtain knowledge. It's not paradoxical, it's as simple as you not wanting to believe or understand that people can understand things and obtain knowledge without your close minded world of scientific experiments.

My claim is based on what I've observed in my life, so other than that you can do research on your own about the moon.

I don't need someone to hold my hand on a daily basis to know something to be true. I don't need someone to confirm that this lighter in my hand is in fact is a lighter. That's how you view the world, not me.


(I must also say I love science and understand it's great potential to help us learn and understand the world around us, all things are not so easily repeated and observable.)

Your absolutely right, I have no evidence. Other than seeing far too many out of wack people running around on those late full moon nights.. Whether the moon does it itself, or if it's psychological I am unsure.. Either way I am positive people act strange..

P.S. I have no problem pulling down my shades to keep light out, and I sleep just as well Full or New, some are just easily swayed.

What's an example of this craziness? Just wondering since everyone has a different definition and scale for craziness.

Well, traditionally they thought that this was the case, right? Hence 'lunatic' in English? All I know is the traditional myths that lunatics were named after the moon because of their behavior during the full moon. I have also heard more recently that it has something to do with mental disorders which operate in cycles or phases, and appear (but are not) in sync with the moon, or that these people weren't able to sleep and so it exasperated already present problems. I dunno I wasn't really paying attention. I just looked on wiki and it does a good recap of everything I just said... so good in fact that it makes me wonder if the prof simply read wikipedia (unlikely) or if that's all there is to it so far.

Personally I always thought it was that with the increased light and visibility during a full moon, people were more likely to be going outside, and thus the natural number of crazy and rambunctious people would be increased on that night as well as the number of people out overall.

So do fish and other forms of sea-life. It is most common for sea-creatures to hunt, mate, or spawn en masse during the full moon.

And it may just be my own whack-job theory, but since I believe humans evolved from sea-life, I think we still retain some of those instincts or predispositions. And if animals other than humans are known to react more instinctually to natural phenomena than us (which for obvious reasons are less in tune to them), it makes sense to me that the moon would play be a major factor in those instincts/reactions (and therefore us.)

Which is a possible explanation for why womens' cycle are also 28 days, the myth of people turning into sex- and violence-crazed werewolves at the full-moon, and so on...

But thats just my idea.
