I listened to psychedelic rock last night, and it was incredible. I was listening to it, and then all of the sudden, all my thoughts stopped, and the music was everything. I looked at a cool tapestry that was on the wall and let my mind see what it wanted in it. It was like a winamp visualization in the tapestry.
Has anyone else listened to psychedelic rock / what did you think?
Does Sgt Pepper / Revolver count? :P
I like listening to the great albums as I go to sleep... weird stuff often happens as a result.
One particularly strange thing that happens when you're lying there simply focused on the music is that the musical part of your brain becomes incredibly enhanced. I'm not sure if you agree with me or not but normally when you listen to music all the instruments mush together to form a coherent but often confusing sound. However, when you're in 'the zone', all of the separate instruments simply fall out and you can keep them all in your mind at the same time... rhythm guitar, lead, drums, vocals, bass, everything just sort of distills out with incredible clarity. It's so powerful it can actually make some bits of music sound strangely empty, like six instruments simultaneously is too simple...
That's a good way of describing it. When you're in the zone listening to music, you can hear each instrument separately and clearly as they're all playing together. I think it makes music so much better. With psychedelic rock, it just forced me into this zone and stopped all my thoughts, making me listen to it. After this happened, I just enjoyed it and looked at a complicated tapestry pattern.
I was walking down the street the other day, and some guy was playing at least 5 instruments at once, all attached to himself. Somehow he was playing whole songs. I was impressed.
Cool, I'm glad that there's somebody out there who knows what I mean :)... personally that only happens when I'm about to go to sleep, and I'm lying down with the lights off. What music in particular do you listen to?
I'll take this opportunity to recommend Loveless, my all time favourite album. Seriously amazing, listen to it on deezer.com or somewhere (although with the right track order's probably a good idea).

If isolating all of the aspects of music is something you enjoy, you should really learn to play an instrument. Most musicians will tell you that this sort of thing is natural to them and happens almost every time they listen to music. Once you know how to create music yourself, it becomes easy to pick it apart and hear all the complexities for what they really are.
One of my favorite things to do is to listen to beck and identify all of the different vocal tracks, because he always has a ton of them and most of them he does himself. You develop a lot more respect for an artist when you realize that they recorded 12+ distinct vocal tracks for one song by themself.
I'm also big on both Radiohead and Built to Spill. You would probably like Spoon, Doves, and possibly Grandaddy.Quote:

and if you like psychadelic rock you would probably really enjoy other classic "metal" and rock bands like iron maiden, black sabbath, thin lizzy, blue oyster cult, janis, pentagram, blue cheer, acdc, taste, lynard skynard and the like.
if you want something more progressive, i also recommend new wavey stuff like devo, the b52's and the slits.
for mental one man band action check out hasil adkins and jawbone.
early rolling stones, and deep purple are good too for pulling stuff apart before sleep.i love black sabbath before bed.

Like dreamsinmymynd said Jimi hendrix and Jefferson Airplane are two great bands of psychedelic rock, about Jefferson Airplane i recommend the Surrealistic Pillow.
In modern music i suggest Bardo Pond, itīs mainly space rock/psychedelic, the best album for me itīs the Ticket Crystals. I also suggest Kula Shaker, itīs Britpop band but a with strong psychedelic influence. If you prefer progressive rock, i recommend Camel, The Shadows, , Soft Machine, Yes or King Crimson
If you dig psychedelic rock then you should check out some GOOD fusion. I say GOOD because msot of it sucks and I honestly wouldn't call it fusion, I'd call it smooth jazz. Check out some Miles davis from during the 70s. I'll put a link to some good shit.

You guys really need to check out Ozric Tentacles. They reinvented Space Rock with their psychedelic, almost folky at times sound. What I love so much about it is that its subtle enough to make great background music, yet there's so much going on when you really pay attention to it. The band's always throwing in bits of pyschedelia throughout their songs to keep it constantly interesting. At the very least check out some tracks here: http://www.last.fm/music/Ozric+Tentacles. Albums to hear are Erpland, Strangitude, and Jurassic Shift, though I've yet to hear a sub-par one in their giant catalog.

Yeah, I love their Lick on the Tip of an Envelope album :). I'm a big fan of folk-rock to begin with, and progressive elements make everything better in my opinion. How's the second one?
Stoned, I can way better than sober focus on every individual instrument, which is interesting, can be cool, but often turns the music into something else.
Still, good Jazz or Classical music really rules if you are really listening to music. I mean sitting down, and doing nothing But listening to music. Almost all people only listen to music while doing something else, like I am doing right now: browsing the web. Can still be great and amusing, but really awesome music gets really awesome if you really listen to it.
