I always assumed "the secret" was someone's get rich quick scheme, as I only ever heard about it on late night infomercials trying to sell books that supposedly gave "the secret" that a list of rich people used to, well, get rich. What I figured I'd find was a mostly blank book that just said, "come up with your own get rich quick scheme like I did, sucker" on the first page.

I thought that that method work really good - so max'ed my credit card out and thought positive that money would come my way........I'm still thinking positive with no results.

maybe if life were like that I wouldn't need a"______"

      Hi InfinityEcho

Yes, that is the danger of having just an introduction without the rest of the information. I do think it would have been best for them to make it clear in The Secret that there is a lot more to it and that each person needs to find out more, and to not take any dramatic steps until they've really found out about how to clear the patterns.

The thing is, whatever your issue is - the reason it's an issue is mostly due to beliefs that are programmed into you - into every cell. So if you have beliefs about money that you may not even be consciously aware of, programmed into every cell of you, even when you change your conscious thinking, it will take a long time for the message to get to every cell - and then a bit longer to reprogram it.

This is why it's important to take it easy in the begining. And to be aware of what is going on. Your conscious mind is now aware of the change, but the rest of you didn't get the memo yet! And as you continue to entrench the new habits, the message will eveeeentually reach the rest of you, and THEN you will start to see changes. It does take time when it's ingrained issues.

I'm going to post something below that explains it more....

The Delay in Seeing Results ...

When making changes within yourself in order to change outside yourself, it's important to accept that there is usually a time delay between your conscious decision to make the changes (for example, self love, or changing beliefs about money etc.).......... and the results you see in your life. And this time delay will depend on the particular issue, and how engrained the belief/pattern is.

You may, for example, have a belief that the only way to get support from a loved one, is to be struggling and in crisis - and this belief will be programmed into all your cells. It will be a part of you. It may have been programmed from childhood experiences..... this will probably take quite a while to change.

When you decide to change something about yourself, 90% of you didn't get the memo yet! It takes a while to filter through, depending on the subject and how strong it is programmed in you.

There's no way of knowing how long it will take for anyone's unconscious to catch up with the conscious decisions. The only time you'll know, is when you see some kind of result - then you'll know, ah, more of me has now caught up

But the good news is, it won't be a case of all 90% all the time. Different aspects will change at different times and it will probably be gradual. And it will be different for different changes.....

For example, imagine a coffee shop. Every day for the last twenty years, a particular customer has come in at 11am and ordered a black coffee with four sugars. All the staff know him, and he no longer needs to order. As soon as the staff see him, they make a black coffee with four sugars, and serve it to him. Then one day, he changes his order. When they bring him the coffee, he tells them he no longer wants sugar in it.

Now, the next time he comes in, one of two things happen: either, the same staff member serves him, but is so in the habit of putting four sugars in the coffee, she goes ahead and does it automatically and has to be reminded by the customer - no sugar. Or..... a different staff member - who hasn't been told about the change, will automatically make the coffee - black with four sugars.

So, it depends on how many staff members there are, and what kind of communication exists between them. It will also depend on each individual staff member, and their own individual ability to get out of the habit, as to how long it will be before it becomes automatic for the customer to receive a black coffee with NO sugar.

During this transition, he may sometimes get black coffee without sugar, and then get four sugars again. Sometimes he may get two sugars, because the staff member caught herself half-way through putting sugar in, and stopped. But each time he comes in, he's getting closer to what he wants, because each time he comes in and the coffee is made - even when they accidently put sugar in it, the message is getting more and more ingrained. And then one day, he'll walk in and his coffee will be automatically served without sugar, and the next day, it will happen again..... and so it will become the norm.

Now.... here's another example - and this explains the difference between the subject matter...

Imagine a Railway Junction. There are two workers who control the signals at this railway junction. Both have been doing this for twenty years. Every day for twenty years, two trains come from opposite directions at 4pm. And every day for twenty years, the controller on duty has set the signal for the East-bound train to stop, in order to allow the West-bound train through, before then giving the green signal to the East-bound one.

One day, both controllers receive a message to say there's a new addition to the track, and from now on, you don't need to stop the East-bound train - there is a new track for it. Now, imagine how long it's going to take for those controllers to trust that new instruction - considering that if it's not true, or if it's an error, the trains will crash and people will be killed.

So in this senario, unlike the coffee shop where it was just a case of everyone getting the message and getting into the new habit - in this senario you've got the Danger element as well!!
And THAT will take longer. These controllers may need to receive that message many times before they believe and trust it.

And one of the controllers may be more trusting than the other, so he may one day allow the train through - and that will work fine. But the other controller may not hear about it, so he may continue to hang onto the old instructions for a while longer - "just in case". But no matter how long it takes, if he continues to get the message, he will eventually trust that it is true and not a mistake, and/or he will hear about the success from the other controller. And he too will then make the change.

We have no idea of what our cells consider "dangerous" - for example, trusting may feel dangerous - that may be the equivilant to some of our cells, of changing the train signals after all these years.
After allllll these years of not trusting, now suddenly they're told they can trust, well it will take a while for that to get through. Whereas, getting into the habit of noticing the good stuff day-to-day would be more like the coffee shop - a habit change.

So the best thing we can do is to remind ourselves that this is what is happening behind the scenes, and to be patient . Knowing that the message is getting through, and that the results will begin to show as each part of you receives, and trusts the message. The more understanding and patient you are, the easier and faster the changes will happen because the less stress, the less resistance to the changes.

And as the rest of the 90% of you catches up with your conscious mind, you'll THEN start to see the results of those changes reflected in your physical world (your mirrors) - money/ relationships/ health/ career etc.

So, if it feels like you're doing everything right, and you're changing your vibrations by focusing on feeling good, and you're out of the habit of negative beliefs, but you're not seeing the results in the physical world, remember that the majority of you hasn't got the memo yet, but if you keep going, it will!

      I hope this makes sense.

      Why is this in philosophy?

The Law of Attraction is probably one of the most idiotic form of New Age bullshit intended to squeeze money out of people's insecurities with things that make absolutely no sense whatsoever. If I got to be in charge, I'd hang these suckers.

I've been sick for a friggin 2 months now so forgive me for having a bit of a negative edge. The Law of Attraction still doesn't make any sense. I just feel kinda bad for putting it out without any further ado.

Trying it, one assumes that failure means they are 'doing it wrong' until something good happens, hence the "it needs to filter down" claim. People tend to assume that the 'secret' is true because it really can't be disproven, though it can't be proven either, regardless of the smattering of anecdotes attesting to its effectiveness.

There's no harm in trying it, but I suspect a more consistently successful approach will be to work toward an outcome instead of expecting it to happen on its own.

That's also what I would criticize about it. If I claim that the secret is to screw a hole in your knee because - by some miraculous means I couldn't care less to elaborate on - it will lead to endless happiness, it doesn't really make any sense either. Actually I think I'll start writing a book on screwing knees right now and if any of you bastards steal my idea I will sue the shit out of you.

Sorry to hear of your illness, Korittke

There are many beliefs and theories and philosophies, and to be honest, unless I've completely missed something really obvious, as far as I know there is not one shred of Obvious proof that any of them is true.

I therefore believe that whatever a person believes, is true for them. So I don't try and convince anyone of what I believe, but I am happy to answer questions if someone is interested and wants to know more, in order to find out if it suits them.

I understand what you're saying, R.D, but I have to say that I don't assume it's true because it can't be disproven. When I first read about it, it made sense to me based on my own life experience, and so I researched it further It works for me, just as certain other beliefs or philosophies or ways of life work for others.

I don't believe in certain other beliefs or philosophies, but I certainly would never say they're not true because, to my knowledge, until we check out of the physical world, we don't reeeeeally know for certain what is true - everything can be explained away in some way or another so it's a matter of choosing what makes sense for you, and feels right to you.

What is true and what is not is not a matter of choice. Antibiotics work even if you don't believe in them.

The Secret is that "The Secret" works because of the phenomenon of selective perception and the unexplained assumption of causality between intention and "stuff" in the universe.

Here's a rant I wrote about The Secret and The Law of Attraction a while ago. I'll repost it here:

You may have heard of “The Secret”, a fairly recent film promoting ‘The Law of Attraction’. Here is a quote from the official website:

One spring day towards the end of 2004, Rhonda Byrne discovered a secret - the secret laws and principles of the universe… It seemed to Rhonda that almost no-one knew the things that she had discovered, even though the concepts could be found in almost every religion and field of human endeavour throughout history… And on that spring day in 2004, when a small, old book called The Science of Getting Rich was put into her hands, and Rhonda's whole life suddenly pulled into spectacular focus, she knew exactly what her mission was to become.”

Now if you’re a normal, rational person, this quote should seem completely nonsensical to you. According to the above, Rhonda discovered “the secret laws and principles of the universe”, a feat perhaps only accomplished by ancient sages and saints such as Jesus Christ or Siddhartha Gautama. And what is she doing with this newfound knowledge? Making shitty self-help films.

It occurred to Rhonda that “almost no-one knew the things that she had discovered”. However, it seems that her sudden revelation happened due to this ‘ancient text’, The Science of Getting Rich. Theoretically, anyone who read this book would suddenly understand the mystical secrets of the universe. However, it would seem that Rhonda was the only one. Why? I submit that this is because she is a pompous asshat who has rearranged basic life concepts and classic ‘bitchy eletist schoolgirl tactics’ into a terrifyingly cinematic production that is solely for the purpose of making lots of cash.

The website divulges almost no information about “The Secret”, so I decided to look it up on the almighty Wikipedia. Once a given person buys “The Secret”, it is revealed to be complete bullshit. Obviously, this is why the website tells you nothing but vague and hollow promises. This is what I have called the ‘bitchy eletist schoolgirl tactics’, because all the people behind “The Secret” are doing is making false claims about their secret club for money.

The main idea of “The Secret” is the ‘Law of Attraction’. My bullshit detector is already going off, because we know that such a terrible film certainly cannot be based on a real scientific ‘Law’. But let’s continue anyhow. The Law of Attraction states “you get what you think about; your thoughts determine your experience." On a basic level, this is very well known. If you think “I’m going to try my best to win this baseball game”, you are more likely to succeed than if you think “Oh man, I suck at baseball, I’ll never win this game”. Duh. I don’t even need to go into more detail. You know this already. However, the idea that someone would make a film about this, and sell it to people, is apalling. The grotesque overexaggerations promoted in the film only make things worse. Some of the ideas asserted by the movie and the people on the community forums are absolutely ludicrous, no less ridiculous than ‘magic’. They take the basic principle of optimism and turn it into some kind of obnoxious magic ritual. “You want to win the lottery? Just sit there and stare at your ticket, thinking about how you’re destined to win, and bam! You win the lottery! It’s that simple!” Of course, the five-zillion people who didn’t win the lottery delude themselves into thinking this still works, while the one guy who does happento win the lottery is displayed as a prime example of “The Secret” in action. The whole idea is based on self-delusion and pathetic wishful thinking. Oh, you didn’t win the lottery? Your Ex-Husband didn’t get back together with you? But you got to sit in just the spot you wanted in Yoga class, because you thought positively about it! The Secret works! All hail The Secret!

Of course, the creators of “The Secret” try to pass it off as a scientific principle. Their website and movie is full of bullshit references to Quantum Physics and such. Of course nobody understands Quantum Physics, so nobody’s going to complain. If Quantum Physics actually allows a person’s pathetic wishful thoughts to physically change the atomic structure of a lottery ticket, I will eat my hat.

In conclusion, don’t bother buying this movie. If you’ve already subscribed to this Psuedo-Philosophy, please give me your address so I can kick you in the face.

I won't bother requoting the entire thing, you know what I'm referring to. Nor am I going to critically deconstruct the entire post.

I think people are taking the this is bullshit stance because they have no idea how to use this law of attraction theory properly. Like I've said in my other post, it didnt work for me the first time, but when i read a few books on the subject not written by the author of the secret, it actually did make sense.

My point: I find the movie interesting but very vague, yes. The concept being referred to though, is true and it does work, however not to the point of you will win everything and you will get this and that and whatever you want. It just doesnt work like that, trust me, and there is a reason for it. If you think the movie is complete bullshit, you have no idea of the history of spiritual thought.

Illusions: Congratulations, I'd like to hear about other things you have manifested, always interested to see how it's worked for others. PM me for a chat

      I agree.

And far out Kamickalo! Do you really think that if everyone believed they would win the lottery at the same time they would? No, they wouldn't. Don't be dumb. That says something about the lottery, not 'The Secret'.

Do you know anything about Quantum Physics? I do. And I'm not complaining. Quantum particles are extremely small. You can't see what they're doing like that.

Sure, the movie is vague and simple. But I guess if you experienced some of the ideas raised, you'd realize that movies such as these only show before-after shots, which might be too hard for some to imagine. Hence why many disagree, take 'The Chasers' for example. They don't know what they're doing in the first place.

Fool! How dare you speak out against the great goddess Rhonda Byrne. The secret never existed until she found it, and by doing so she released the secrets cosmic powers into the universe. The great goddess Rhonda Byrne won't look kindly upon such insolence as this. I will go and calm down now...before I use the secret to make a comet smash into your house.

Lol, Wow, Kamickalo and Jeff, you seem to have both been deeply affected by this
I'm wondering what terrible thing has happened to you as a result of this movie, and how much you know about Rhonda Burns and the background to getting this movie out, that would make you so upset?

I'm guessing others may have similar reactions to "Bowling for Columbine", "Sicko" and "An Inconvenient Truth" - I'm always interested to know: when someone isn't personally involved in these projects, and when there are sooooo many conflicting beliefs, ideas, theories, religions, opinions etc, what makes that person so emotional about that particular one. If I don't agree with a particular project/movie/book/religion etc. I just don't buy it/watch it/read it.

But I certainly don't begrudge others a) watching/reading it; b) expressing their views in whatever medium they do, and c) making money out of their work/invention/discovery/project/product... as far as I'm concerned, it has nothing to do with me lol - if I don't agree with something, I don't have to buy it

      Hi Mystic

Thanks for explaining that. I guess that must be the same reason people give for being so emotional about "Bowling for Columbine", "Sicko" and "An Inconvenient Truth"
      Interesting.....

Of course... considering it "fundamentally flawed" would depend on each person's perspective .... Check out these excerpts from an interview with Charles K. Johnson.....

""The facts are simple," says Charles K. Johnson, president of the International Flat Earth Research Society. "The earth is flat." "

""You can't orbit a flat earth," says Mr. Johnson. "The Space Shuttle is a joke—and a very ludicrous joke."

"His soft voice carries conviction, for Charles Johnson is on the level. He believes that the main purpose of the space program is to prop up a dying myth—the myth that the earth is a globe. "Nobody knows anything about the true shape of the world," he contends. "The known, inhabited world is flat. Just as a guess, I'd say that the dome of heaven is about 4,000 miles away, and the stars are about as far as San Francisco is from Boston." "

""The whole point of the Copernican theory is to get rid of Jesus by saying there is no up and no down," declares Johnson. "The spinning ball thing just makes the whole Bible a big joke."
Not the Bible but Johnson's own common sense allowed him to see through the globe myth while he was still in grade school. He contends that sensible people all over the world, not just Bible believers, realize that the earth really is flat. "Wherever you find people with a great reservoir of common sense," he says, "they don't believe idiotic things such as the earth spinning around the sun. Reasonable, intelligent people have always recognized that the earth is flat." "

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's "big fat scam." I read that link you provided above (at least 85% of it) and it's very good information. I have a book by Kevin Hogan called "Covert Persuasion", so I can understand a bit about where he's coming from. I agree, you can't just think of something, visualize it, feel good about it and have it miraculously fall into your lap...that's ludicrous. I do however believe that action and vision (visualization) work hand in hand. They are co-laborers. But what's just as valuable? Competence. You have to have a model that's going to take you from point A to point B. What's more...a proven model, or prepare to go through trial and error and if you're persistent..."you'll fail your way to the top." Take financial success for example (or at least my definition of it)...if you're an entrepreneur starting from "point A", vision is just the beginning...you'll need a model, you'll need to have competence or become competent in your endeavour...THEN take action on what you have put together. It will make the journey so much more worthwhile if you have a positive/optimistic mindset so that you're more flexible and things will run smoother. Metaphorically speaking, once all the bullets are loaded in the barrel, aim at your target and pull the trigger. I firmly believe in the Law of Attraction, but I also believe they left out a huge chunk of what else is required. However what they said, I do support.

I didn't read the book but I heard that the author says that all the problems that happen to people are their own fault! Like natural disasters and shit.

Anyway, yes I believe that you need to mentally see where you want to be but everyone should know that...

But i do of course believe you need to mentally see where you like to be at but everyone knows that...

and yes visualization is important to me too.
