Thread: why is this stuff legal???

alcohol...seriously just think about it for a second.

this stuff causes way too many problems, not only to your health, but to society as a whole.

im not gonna get into all the health issues but...

so many ill acts are committed when a person is drunk-rapes, murders, and other acts of violence. i also feel that alcohol significantly contributes to the number of unwanted pregnancies and spreading of STDs.

some abusive spouses never lay an ill hand on their partner unless theyre drunk. same thing with many of the child molestors out there.

and how many car wrecks are blamed on drunks every year? i dont know the numbers, but i do know its too damn many.

i think that all these ads that say to not drink and drive, and please drink responsibly are futile. when youre drunk youre not gonna think of this stuff. and when it comes to driving either youre minimally drunk and dont realize that youre not fit to drive despite it, or youre raging drunk and the thought eludes you entirely. after all, how can you think of this stuff when your attention span has been reduced to 7 seconds.

i got drunk a few times when i was in high school. i didnt do anything regrettable, but still dont ever wanna to that again. i hated the way it made me feel. and to this day i feel nausiated when i think of the taste, or if i see someone else drinking.

i mean, why would anybody wanna do that to themselves. it makes you lose control of your body, youre stumbling around, off balance, and cant hold down a converstion, all followed by the dreaded hangover.

i once had a friend who became an outright alcoholic and had to be hospitalized. now THAT'S scary.

just recently i read a story about this woman who was living with her friend. the friend was married and had a 9 month old son. the friend kicked her out because she was an alcoholic. the woman decided to drown her sorrows in alcohol ( OF COURSE !!) and while she was drunk, she went to her now ex-roomate's apt, took her son and slit his throat, in an act of vengeance. would she have still done it had she been sober? maybe. maybe not. but you wonder....

this stuff needs to be banned. its just too dangerous. i find it ironic that drugs are banned-im assuming due to percieved dangers associated with it, and yet they keep alcohol on the shelves like it was candy...and tobacco too, which is a drug also, but thats another story.

there are so many other ways to feel good. meditate, simmer in the hottub, make love to your sweetie, eat your favorite food till it comes out your nose, hell, get a massage (oooohhh, yeeaahh) im personally quite a gum addict myself-at least that stuff tastes good.

but alcohol? its the poison water.

alcohol is intextricably bound to almost every single human culture/society since it was discovered thousands of years ago. sure, people do some stupid things while drunk...but it's not the alcohol that MAKES them do it...it's just EASIER to be a complete asshole. in my experience, it's always the same guy who acts like a complete jerkoff when drunk and ruins it for everyone else. it's not the alcohol that's the problem, but specific people who drink it. i always have a great time when drinking (...except when i end up at some shitty nightclub throwing away all of my money on overpriced beer and impossibly stacked-against-me-odds at a blackjack table)

Largely for money and population control, if you ask me.

I think alcohol is not bad at all. It acts as a truth serum. It makes people speak honestly, pursue their hidden desires, and show their true side. I agree, many people do terrible things when they drink alcohol, but it's because they are terrible people. It's like one looking in a mirror to find their overweight reflection. The mirror will not lie, but it is the mirror's fault for exposing the obesity, or the person for not taking care of themself?

People should actually embrace alcohol for highlighting their faults. That's how the world works, that's how people learn. They see a weakness, then address it and resolve it. By the way, I rarely drink.

as i said, i got drunk a couple times when i was in high school.

one time i got massively drunk, blacked out and found myself making out with one of my friends. reminds me of something someone once said that people are naturally bi-sexual, but cultural conditioning covers this up for most people. then she proceeded to make out with my boyfriend, as i watched bemused.

then she went on to this other guy, who was engaged to another chick and was soon to move to korea where she was and marry her. he started asking for condoms, and even though i was drunk, i started preaching to him about fidelity. RFLMFAO. cuz truthfully, i cant stand cheating and never forgive it.

but i still stand by my words.

i personally didnt enjoy being drunk. i hated having such a short attention span, and feeling like the ground was shifting under me. and then blacking out to found myself making out with my friend-funny as it is-is most disturbing, not cuz she's a girl and im straight, but because what if it had been something else? what if i had had sex with a guy and gotten pregnant? or AIDS? or what if i had decided to drive!!! i could have died that night, or someone else !!! now that is bloody well scary!!

i have a love-hate relationship with alcohol.

i have done some pretty stupid things while drunk, like bidding "good evening" to the patrons of a pub's second story balcony before jumping off (don't remember doing this) and waking up unable to walk for three days...jumping off of a 40 foot bridge naked into the river at a grad party and floating facedown unconscious until a friend hauled me out...trading punches to the face with willing friends...etc

on the other hand, i have never done anything which was a serious threat to anyone else, physically or psychologically. or gone against any of my deep-seated convictions.

even though i never drive drunk anymore ( simply because it's not worth the hassle to drive like a granny while wasted) i have never driven when i knew i was incapable of driving safely. i always slept it off in my vehicle.

i don't desire to have casual sex, and have denied numerous boys and girls while i was loaded and extremely horny, even when they were naked.

in short, alcohol has never made me do anything which threatened another human being, or my true values...simply foolish things i can laugh at the next day...

that being said, i am a borderline alcoholic, and wish i could stop drinking.

yet drinking has taught me alot about myself...it is my opinion that the things one does while blackout drunk show their true nature...that is why drinking is such a bonding experience. my present group of friends are mostly drinking buddies, and we have been through alot together in our drunken escapades.

it is my opinion that when you can be around someone when they are blind-drunk, and still respect them, they are a worthy friend..

and by the way, what are beer goggles? lol ive heard of it but dont know what the flaming hell they are.

ah yes, i forgot to mention the beergut. quite a nasty affliction that one is. kind like the pregnancy belly but it wont suddenly go away after 9 months loool.

I can't say alcohol should be outrighted banned, mainly because it will never be. It's just not drunk responsibly in those ill committed acts. I personally drink now and then, it's a great relaxant for me. I've never been drunk driving nor in a morally questionable situation when on it. I've never been piss drunk nor wasted, I had no intent to go so far.

I know some people who live by the bottle, and it's sad to witness that as their main coping mechanism, but sometimes, people just don't have the willpower to stand on their feet, so they lie down and laugh drunk to get a breath of fresh air, and it helps to a degree.

Weed is similar in this principle, heck, it's even a medical drug in some cases. The thing I learned about either, though, is that is usually amplifies whatever current state of mind the user is in, so getting high with some pretty unresolved issues was very strange for me. It was both good and bad, meaning I had a sense of freedom but also was overwhelmed by haunting thoughts at the same time. It's just one of those issues that will stay gray between the black and white borders.

You get too drunk. You see somebody you would normally find inadequate. The more drunk you become the better or more "adequate " they become.
You sober and wake up with a hang over and inadequacy.

The truth is that only 5 or 6% of the population is date-able. Alcohol is necessary so that the rest of society can hook up.

Any drug can be considered good or bad depending on the way in which it is used. However, I think it is all too conveniant that alchol is legal, when it does much more harm that marijauna or psychadelics...Actually, I think it is a way to keep people in their place. Think about it. When America was being taken from the Native Americans, they gave them alcohol. This destroyed their culture and is what enabled the British and whomever else to steal their lands away. It squelches free thinking and rebellion, and it keeps people happy. I know that it is a far-fetched notion, but it seems that way sometimes.

Don't get me wrong, I drink as much as the next man, but I've got a few qualms about it's legality, when compared to many of the things that are illegal. It's kind of like the seatbelt law, here. For years the cops have been advertising their "Buckle Up, it's the Law. We're raising the stakes on people who don't buckle up, because we're out to save lives." However, at the same time that they were getting really gung ho about enforcing this law, they completely lifted the Helmet law for motorcyclists, in this, the state that holds some of the biggest if not the biggest 2 motorcyclists gatherings on the planet every year. Bike Week and Biketober fest.

Where's the logic?

They tried to ban it. Didn't work. At all. Speakeasies. You ban alcohol, it'll just pop up again, illegally. It's just like any other drug, but even easier to make. For example, take a bottle of straight grape juice and put in some yeast. Wait a week or two, and it's alcoholic. That's all alcohol is. There's no plants to grow in your basement. Just grains/fruits/whatever (Most organic plants), and yeast. Bam. Alcohol. (By the way, I totally don't support anybody making this stuff at home--when the yeast reacts it produces carbon dioxide and some other stuff, and with improper safety, the whole shebang can explode.)

Banning it again wouldn't do anything, whether or not it was the 'right' thing to do. Especially since alcohol is a vital part of modern culture.

I definately don't see it. And cigarettes. I don't look down upon anyone who drinks or smokes. Hell, I've done a bit of it myself. But they are MUCH more harmful than LSD or mushrooms could EVER be. I mean, WTF? Keep us addicted so that we can't do anything but follow authority....But ban anything that helps us to think for ourselves. I mean, that's smart, right?

i have to agree with everyone who said that it's not the alcohol, it's the people who drink it that's the problem. we've all taken a swig of fire water at one point, right? that doesnt' make us bad people. some of us, if not all of us, have gotten smashed at least once. that also doesn't make us irresponsible.
it's people that do it uncontrollably that are the problem. my mother-in-law drank so much that today if she took a SIP of any kind of liquor, her liver would fail and she would die. it's people like her who get violent and hurt people when intoxicated that are the problem.
unfortunately, we can't card stupid people. they think that if you're 21 (in the usa) you're legally responsible enough to drink. i think that if we didn't make alcohol such a taboo, it wouldn't be such a big deal to drink at all.
people, teach your kids what drinking is about, show them that its not all its cracked up to be! that's one of the things we as a society could do to lower the hype of getting drunk.

I definately do not see people who drink as bad people. I would be a hypocrite. But it doesn't make sense that the Government itself is crazy for letting it stay legal when things like LSD or shrooms, or other hallucinogens and petty drugs are banned. They do so much less harm. And, they aren't as addictive, if they are at all (which I don't think they are...). I don't think alchohol is bad. I just think that having that legal while other things that have much less potential for harm (and much more potential for free thinking and new ideas on life and religion and freedom) is all too conveniant.

Exactly. It's not the alcohol that I have a problem with, when moderated; it's the hypocrisy behind its being legal while many other less dangerous substances are demonized, and the way it seems to be marketed and distributed to be more "in the faces" of certain demographics more than others.

I agree with Gwen, she knows her stuff. If I argue about it I'll just get blue in the face and angry at the government. I will however post some anecdotes.

after using mushrooms, I went on a diet and started to live a healthy lifestyle which hasn't stopped in the last month. I woke up feeling better about myself and the world, and I felt like this was the first day of the rest of my life.

after using alcohol, I woke up feeling fat and filthy. I wiped the grime off my face and started chugging water to get rid of that pounding headache. I reflected on what I might have done the night before and how I ended up in this strange place and why a certain girl had appeared attractive while I was under the influence. I decided to sleep the day away so that I would feel less sore and depressed the next day.

the alcohol left me wanting more alcohol, the mushrooms left me wanting more life.

and guess which one is illegal for my own safety?

Alright, never done shrooms, though I HAVE heard of people who've had 'bad trips' and been traumatized for a long period of time afterwards. Though I can agree that I've heard of a lot more people who've had horrible hangovers as well as obsessive alcoholics.
