Attention To Detail: A Way To Insure Lucidity (Dream Article)

      Hey Folks,

I am back with another article. This article is going to be somewhat interesting because not only are you going to learn something, but it is something I learned this morning upon waking up from a dream.. I am going to tell you the dream and then go into detail about somethings..

      [ Dream ]

It started off with a False Awakening. Everything that surrounded me was super vivid and realistic. I got up out of bed and did a nose RC, for some reason I doubted that I was dreaming because of the fact that the world that surrounded me was just too real / life like. A second later I tried to move a water glass that was sitting on my dresser where my TV was by telekinesis. Since that failed to work as well, I just thought I had woken up.

I decided to leave my room and go smoke a cig. When I entered the hall way it was mostly dark. I turned around to close my door quietly and turned to my left looking down the hall toward the weight room. Every detail of my house was in my dream, including my dads harley-davidson clock that lit up in the weight room. I could see in that room a bit because of that lighting. What i saw was the very end of a bed. I didn't pay much mind to it, nor the fact that I could hear my dad talking in his room with his light on. I knew for whatever reason the time was about 3:30 in the morning.

So I end up walking down the main steps of our house, and while I am doing that I look down at the bottom of the steps and see a person from left to right, walk by. Again, I didn't pay much mind to this and kept walking down the stairs. When I got down to the stairs I saw a person sitting in my dads leather chair with a dog in their lap. I ended up walking toward the back door and was stopped by my dad. He was in his boxers and a shirt with some sort of hat on. The only thing that crossed my mind was the fact that I thought it was strange he was getting up at this time.

Right before I was to go outside to smoke a cig, I look to my left and see a lady standing there in glasses. She ended up lighting up a cig inside the house. I told her to come outside with me and smoke. The dream faded shortly after that

      [ Dream Ends ]

Okay if you read that whole thing you are probably wondering what's the point?!?!

That's exactly it. I thought about this dream for a while, and there are at least 7 KEY POINTS where I should have known I was dreaming, or at LEAST done a reality check..

      Point 1:

Upon awakening and doing a RC that I paid no mind to, and trying to get a water glass to move by telekinesis, I should have kept doing a RC. Since I didn't realize the nose RC, I should have came prepared with a back up plan. A Second Reality Check that can be used, just in case the first one doesn't make you aware of your surroundings.

      Point 2:

When I was leaving my bedroom, the first thing I had noticed in the matter of seconds was 1: My dad talking in his bedroom to my step mom with the light on. I should have RC'd then as well because there is no point for my parents to be up in the late night hours.....

      Point 3:

Just as soon as I realized my parents up and talking, I turned and saw the end of a bed down the hall in the weight room. I should have noticed this as well and reality checked at this moment. I of course, went on with the dream...

      Point 4:

As I was walking down the steps a person walked from left to right, passing the bottom of the stairs and going into the other room. I should have noticed that there should have been nobody else in my house up at this time. I should have RC'd again! but failed to do so....

      Point 5:

When I got to the bottom of the stairs I turned and saw a person sitting in my dad's leather chair with a dog sitting in their lap. This should have been a major cue for me to reality check, but I failed to do so again, I just kept on moving....

      Point 6:

As I was entering the last room before going outside, I bumped into my dad. My dad had been wearing a hat, a shirt, and boxers. This should have given it away from the start, but all I was wondering is why he was getting up at this time. Should have reality checked at this moment, but kept going with the dream..

      Point 7:

As soon as I was about to walk outside I looked to my left and saw a lady standing by the fireplace with glasses on. She was smoking a cig inside the house. Not only am I not allowed to smoke in the house, but there should have not been a woman standing there. It should have dawned on me that it was a little bit strange, and I should have reality checked, but failed to do so. The dream of course, ended shortly after that...

My point to all this is simple. In a matter of a couple minutes I had 7 places where I could have done Reality Checks and realized I was dreaming. If i was paying attention to the details in my dreams, it would have made me lucid in a matter of no time. Since everything was so realistic and life like, I second guessed myself when I did the nose plug RC. That is why I say to have at least 2 RC's prepared, just in case 1 of them fails...

I believe I have figured out one of the biggest keys to having Lucid dreams. That is paying attention to detail. If you go back into your dream journal and pinpoint locations where you should have (or could have) done a RC and become Lucid, your mind will start to soak in that information. Then hopefully next time, in your dreams to come, you will remember that (about pinpointing) and you will do a reality check and then you will be Lucid..

Not only should you pay attention to your surroundings in your dreams, but also pay attention while you are awake. Awaken Awareness is the best practice for Dream Awareness. The more you are aware in waking life, the more aware you will be inside your dreams. It goes back to my previous article about doing everything you can in the waking world, to prepare yourself for the dream world. If you can get all the preparation you need in the waking world, each time you lay down to sleep, will be an excellent chance for you to become lucid!

Anyways, I just thought I would share that little information that I myself had learned this morning. 7 key points in a matter of a couple minutes. I urge you guys to go back into your recent dreams in your journal and just see if you can PINPOINT some places where you should have done a RC or something to make you realize that you are dreaming. I think you will be surprised to find that, LUCIDITY opportunities come more frequently then we think....

      take care

No Problem! Once you get into the habit of doing that in your dream journal, it should become easier for you to realize that while you are actually dreaming!

      Good luck to you

"Not only should you pay attention to your surroundings in your dreams"
How can you pay attention to something when you're having a regular dream? Then you're just following the dream without control, no?

When I'm in a regular dream I have lots and lots of weird stuff going on that I should find odd, but I don't... something tricks me into finding it normal.

Paying attention to your surroundings in a regular dream is just basically realizing when strange things occur.. Triggering yourself to ask "Am I dreaming." The more spots you find in your dreams where you could have realized you are dreaming, better your chances in the next dreams to "Look out" for things like that. It's more so preparing yourself for the next time something like that happens, and in the future...

I just had a dream last night where i was running from the cops because I had killed an officer. I noticed a beautiful city sky line with amazing lights all over.. I remember thinking I wanted to take a picture of it with my cell phone... In that moment I am showing some sort of awareness to what is going on.. Instead of taking a picture, I should have realized it was a dream...

      Things of that nature...

I was just reading how those who meditate have better chances of lucid dreaming.
something to do with awareness of your self, not so much your surroundings, but the more you are aware of your self, you notice your surroundings more as well. I just read it yesterday online, if I remember where it was, I'll post it. I think I'm gonna go meditate now. (they have some good cd out there to help you meditate, with brain wave technology, so that your brain enters the deep meditation state quicker than by yourself. ps The delta cds are great to fall asleep to.

Yah that is a good point. I am actually going to be posting here in the near future, just my whole philosophy if you will, on how I go about Dreams / Lucid Dreams.. and being in the right state of mind.. so look for it sometime this week!

Warning: It will be quite long and in depth, but for those who read it all, may you gain knowledge!

So awareness and what you choose to focus that awareness on is the key? I'll agree with that!

I heard somewhere recently that 85% of all of what a person does is on autopilot. We react to things without even thinking about them, which is the exact opposite of lucid dreaming.

So training yourself to pay attention to details during the day can help break up those periods of "autopilot", and will increase your odds of getting lucid. But only as long as your search for detail doesn't become another automated process.

Castaneda described a method to break free of the autopilot curse, what he referred to as "Not Doing". This was of vital importance to his training, and consisted of not doing the things you normally would do out of habit. This requires conscious thought to think of something new, and forces you out of autopilot mode.

You don't have to limit yourself to just one thing to grow your awareness. It could be something simple like brushing your teeth with your left hand instead of your right. There are countless opportunities to expand your awareness every moment of every day. If you can break free of that autopilot mode that is...

Ironically and unexpectedly I had a lucid dream the other night just after reading this. I had walked out of my bedroom and saw a lattern outside the window and it was swaying like a tree would, my first thought was WHY WAS THERE A LATTERN OUTSIDE, the second was it swaying lol.

I lost control of the dream soon after walking around my house exploring though.
