      correct definition?

well, my son said these are called lucid dreams, so I'm posting to ask what you think...

approx. 6 years ago when I was having an awful nightmare, I managed to wake myself up from it... since then, the very rare times I had nightmares, I'd been able to do that... is that what 'lucid dreams' is about- being able to consciously connect yourself back to the awake state?

Being aware that you are in a dream is about the easiest way to put it. If you woke yourself up because you knew you were dreaming, then you were lucid for a little bit. But, you can learn to stay in your dreams and control them with practice... just read through the main webpage.

You probably were lucid, but just for a little bit.

Michaels right. If you were lucid at all, it lasted for a FRACTION of a second because it sounds like you just popped right out of there...

      Welcome!

At the least, you were semi-lucid: not fully aware that you are dreaming but, subconsciously knowing that there's an 'out' (in the form of waking to escape).

If you've ever been in a situation where you've been able to explicitly think to yourself "This is a dream" or "I'm dreaming" then that's a lucid dream.

And welcome aboard. Hopefully you'll stick around and maybe improve your dream life even more.

yes, I was aware that I was dreaming...
but considering how those nightmares are, why on earth would I want to STAY in them? to me, waking up was a GOOD thing

anything goes in your dream world! You could fight your nightmare...or simply fly away to some tropical paradise in another universe. Any dream can be controlled if you learn the practice of Lucid dreaming, thats why you would want to stay in them.

and a nightmare that you know is a dream HAS to be less terrifying than a nightmare you think is reality...think about it

If you stay in a nightmare, you can control it! People use this to get over their fears! You know the world is fake, so instead of leaving it and getting away, conquer it!

No, I would not say those were Lucid Dreams, as Lucidity is the state of realizing you are dreaming and staing in the dream state. What you have is more akin to building a reflex to wake up from nightmares, but not to control them.

That is an exceptional start, though. If you can stop yourself from waking up but instead stay in the dream state, you would indeed be having Lucid dreams.

A lucid dream is defined by the recognition that one is dreaming while dreaming. The duration of awareness does not affect whether the dream contained lucidity or not. It only affects for how long the dreamer remains lucid.

Since he did recognize that he was dreaming:

As I've explained in another thread, control has no relevance in the determination of whether one is or not. Control only influences the quality and level of lucidity.
