i believe that i experience the same thing you are talking about. it is very common for me. when i am tired and i lay down, i will be thinking of things and as i get more and more tired, the thoughts start going off into seemingly irrational tangents and the subconcious begins to take over. now normally it is hard to me to remain self-aware when i slip into a state where the subconcious has totally taken over, but yeah, as you said, sometimes you become aware that you are slipping off into a dream and you wake up. not much comes of these "dreams" normally. mostly they are just unexplainable thoughts going from one tangent to another, but i have had some more true dream-like experiences where there is actually something happening that is more than just jumbled thought. i have even been able to become lucid in the first few seconds of sleep, but it is hard for me to hold onto it without waking up, and things are harder to control because the brain is still in a transition phase. at least, that is my theory.
