You can now by melatonin from most drug stores. They are usually ranging from $5-10 for 30-100 capsules. (I am just estimating.. could be off..)
The reason it was banned in some parts of the world for a while was because there was no conclusive evidence for its effectiveness. If you buy it now, it should advertise that it will help with jet lag and re-adjusting sleep patterns. This is because the only evidence found for melatonin oral adminstration was an influence on the circadian rhythym. (Thus it is used for jet lag)
The idea is to help your body regulate its circardian rhythym, or concept of the time of day, through relative melatonin levels. By taking a melatonin pill, your body will get the message of, "Oh, it is late at night. Time to go to sleep" sort of message. So, if you use it infrequently, be prepared for some sleep pattern disruptions because you are fooling around with your biological clock.
The tryptophan, b6, 5htp, mix - go for it. However, as my recent posts will illustrate, these mixes actually reduce REM periods and therefore invariably reduce dream time.
(See "Vitamin B6 - Reduces REM Sleep")
