5-HTP and medication
Hey everyone. I'm not sure if people here will be able to answer my question but I figured it was worth a shot.
I've heard that taking 5-HTP whilst on anti-depressants can be fatal and can cause serotonin syndrome. I went into Holland and Barretts today and purchased some 5-HTP and the woman who served me repeated such information.
I'm not on anti-depressants but I am on anti-psychotics. I take 50mg of Quetiapine (Seroquel) every night. Now I'm slightly worried that the 5-HTP could cause issues. I've read that is has for some but as I am on a lose dose of Quetiapine I was wondering how safe it would be.
Now I am going to consult a doctor about this regardless of what people type here but I was curious to know if anyone has been in a similar situation to me.
Cheers

Considering that quetiapine acts as a 5-HTP antagonist, and not an agonist it should be safe. I'm pretty sure you only usually get serotonin syndrome if you take 5-HTP and MAOI's or anti depresentants since they increase serotin receptor activity.
Anyways thats just what I figured, obviously the doctor will be able to tell you, but I think it should be safe.
Tell us whatt the doctor has to say :)

Well I rang my doctor and she said she wasn't sure. I went to two different pharmacists. One said it wasn't safe and the other said she thought it would be fine. So I don't really know what to do, heh. I'm only on a low dose of quetiapine anyway so I don't see a problem. I'll let people know if it messes me up though. :)
