Thread: Somthing I heard today that restored my faith in humanity

Probably didn't quite understand the whole scope of things. Sure, you can stick two people together and say "ALL DONE!" but all the implications and conflicting opinons and giant floating pink mushrooms make things a bit too complicated...

Meh, I trust Katty, she uslually tells the truth. Anyway, it lifted my spirits a lot. I hate seeing all my gay friends not being understood.

No offense in popping the bubble, but to me its the opposite of the topic of this post. I'm not going to get into a philosophical discussion because I naturally have an aversion to debating on the computer. It just gives me the gibblies. If you wnat my opinion, look to your left two small rows down from my name. I don't hate gay people. I still love them as I love everyone talk walks the earth. I simply don't condone what they do.

my point is, though I see the message you want to convey, 5 years old don't really have a grip on how society works and haven't been completely corrupted by others stereotypes and opinons. I am sure that after she said that to her mother though, she was probably spoken to about the matter and how that was "wrong" or whatever belief the mother has about it. Kids are innocent, they are born with blank slates and only genes to establish how they will take in what they learn, We are the ones that instill fear and hate and prejudice and so many other evils upon them.

So I think the message isn't bad, but it saddens me to know that it won't last long. A 5 year old won't fight for her convictions, if she even has any more than what wanting chocolates or whatever. In fact, that is not even so much a conviction as it is a misunderstanding of how human relations work. I truly doubt the child understands the whole gay marriage issues and is siding with one side...

And there lies a problem. We try and raise our children to be accepting of diversity, but most seem to assume that once the situation is understood that they have to pick a side on the issue. Therefore indifference denotes lack of understanding.

I'm not saying that this child is open minded or anything, I just hope that when children old enough to understand start getting views like this kind of indifference or acceptance, we don't assume that they don't understand and try and drum one side of the issue into their heads.

I completely agree...unfortunately most people try to bestow their beliefs, or the popular beliefs, upon their children. Mostly in matters like these when, let's face it, the parents do not want the kid to "turn out gay". While some people are incredibly open minded and will respect their offspring's life choices and preferences, most parents will try and "stop" their son from becoming gay at the root, as if it was something under their control. They will jump at happenings like that to try and steer their child in the right direction, fearing the stuff like that indicates that they are in the path of becoming gay or something ignorant like that, and in the process pass on their prejudice on to them...

Hmmm. I'm not so sure you would. Even if you weren't busy.
If you don't want to explain that's fine.

I've never really liked the philosophy section. To me, it's like a giant bout of groin kicking. Everybody kicks everyone else in the soft bits and everyone else kicks back. In the end, everybody just ends up with sore groins and nobody's really gotten anywhere.

That's an important metaphor for life.

The youth, if given a chance, can view issues we see as radical, as being less radical, if at all. I believe this is a good sign, as, in this society, the promotion of tolerance for such issues by which have already been proven to not mentally nor physically harm others is essential. Some people don't see that.
