I'm not who I thought I was!

Last night I was thinking a lot about myself and all of a sudden I realised that practically everything I'm going through is the result of some really really deep and unique part of my personality. I traced it all back in my mind. Namely, it was about my Asperger's Syndrome, so it was a little bit easier for me to recognise. But the biggest part of it is that I realised that the person who I had always associated with myself was not actually me. It's really hard to explain, but basically, it's like society sticks labels onto you and the labels completely hide who you really are, and I was trusting the labels more than my own understanding of myself.

I also realised that a lot of the things I thought were weaknesses were actually powers. Bisexuality, for example.

It's come to me to write this because it's so easy to overlook and I think it's probably really dangerous for some people. My condition has a name, but really I think that everyone has a 'condition', it's just that they are not labelled as easily. What I mean is, everybody has their own fixed psyche, but we go around thinking that anybody can change into anybody and that if you aren't one way or another then for some reason you're bad. But I think the truth is that we are actually all branches on a tree. We can't change our type or environment, but we grow at different rates according to our species.

I think this was my happy new year present!!!!

Slow down and think about what you really mean, go over in your mind what the proposition you're making is, possible criticisms and problems, then calmly write down in clear and simple english what exactly you mean.

Because what you've written up there is scrambled.

Because you obviously have a lot of spontaneous thoughts that you feel the need to share with people.

The problem is these are more often than not half formed and not really interesting or worthy enough to warrant the creation of a new thread. You do create many many threads like this, and they often fizzle about in mediocrity because of the unstable ideas you put forth to start/

The way people USUALLY share ideas like yours that they regularly get is through something like a blog, where people can choose to read and comment if they feel the need, but they don't clutter up a public forum.

Also there are no minimum standards of quality, so you can really just say whatever you want.


This is why you should get a blog.

I'm so glad someone else has realized it. I've been avoiding thinking / constructing an image of myself for a long time now. The basic reasoning is, I'm too close to see it right. I've figured I'm kinda different from the average gay, leftist, intellectual, Brazilian. It becomes really obvious when I compare myself with my sister - we've started disagreeing so much lately it's like we haven't been raised together at all.

People don't use cancer to explain their problems/disfunction in society. Cancer is something to get better from. I've never heard anyone say they have "recovered" from Asperger's or are even trying to. Therefore, it is basically just another lablel. Like Bipolar disorder/ADD/ADHD and the various others. I'm not saying this is what the OP is doing, just more so, to be careful about such things...because mental disorders should not be used to explain things or make excuses about why someone is such a way. Truly knowing yourself goes so much deeper than these labels.

Yeah, there are probably some people who are like "I have aspergers so etc" when they're really just awkward socially, so they use it to explain away their problems. But, I don't know many retards.

no, no, NO. now, I don't know a WHOLE lot about Asperger's, but my cousin Fred was born with it, and I know from being around him that it's hardly comparable to ADHD/bipolar. this condition is a type of autism I think, or it's similar, I don't know. but Fred has been all but impossible for my aunt to handle. he's absolutely WILD, running all over the place, getting into EVERYTHING...he doesn't know how to behave in public (for example, where most kids his age would understand that you need to be quiet at a certain time/place, he'll speak loud or even yell, even after being told to be quiet repeatedly. not because he's being defiant, but because he just does not understand).

and he has no fear! one time, my aunt was busy in the kitchen, and heard something on the roof. she dismissed it as a squirrel. she heard it again, but it didn't sound like a squirrel, so she checks it out. when she gets outside, she sees Fred running back and forth across the roof, full speed, no fear. she has to keep things like ladders, lawn mowers, power tools, etc. locked up very securely.

okay, and even just looking at him, you can tell something isn't "right." he's small, and very very thin.

I don't mean to snap at you, it's just...Asperger's Syndrome is not one of those disorders that you can just take the name and use it as a fake crutch to blame all your problems on. I don't know, that seems to me sort of like someone saying they can't drive themselves to work because they have no legs, and you look and see that they clearly do. in other words, not something you can fake.

bipolar and ADHD, yes, you can. and it's unfortunate that so many people do, because it makes effective treatment harder to reach and also makes the condition less "legitimate" or "respectable." I struggled for years with whether or not I had something (I knew there was plenty of hype surrounding these disorders and didn't want to just be following a trend), until finally a psychotic episode (followed by a month's hospitalization) made it clear to me that there was a real problem.

these conditions aren't any less real than Asperger's or cancer, and they can be detrimental or even ruinous to some people's lives, if not treated...I can tell you from personal experience that bipolar at least is very real, and medication makes a world of difference. I say all that just because you (nina) seem to downplay it as if it is really nothing but a label...? but maybe I misread.

Yeah I think telling these people they have a problem that needs to be fixed is the worst thing. Better to, with ADHD for example, get them to use their traits in a positive way. So rather than running about screaming and breaking shit, get them to use their energy to write a book or learn maths etc. whatever.

Idolfan, don't worry I get what you're saying completely. You are not what society labels you. As Alan Watts once said "You can be free of any labels society puts on you". It appears you have figured this out. Now you can be your true self. The benefits of this are great. Less stress for example, because you're not trying to put on an act every time you're talking to someone etc.

I don't know why everyone is saying you didn't write clearly, maybe they just aren't familiar with Ego and true-self etc.

What? High-level doctor? Not claiming your accusation wrong, but where is the validity?

I don't know if that's true either but I think that if any doctor has any sense of decency they would try a good diet and using the person's energy for something productive before giving them strong stimulants.
One thing I should say about methylphenidate (adderal - dextroamphetamine and amphetamine - is bullshit though coz amphetamine is just speed which is obviously addictive) though is that it seems to be fairly well tolerated and work pretty well with almost no addiction, if not taken for many years.
However I wouldn't give it to kids mainly because their brain will basically grow with the drug in it's system, therefore not producing it's own dopamine etc. and therefore when they go off them, they're basically screwed.
Most kids (diagnosed with ADD/ADHD) don't need drugs anyway, mainly because most don't have ADD/ADHD.

Arguments of authority hold no place in science. The validity is in hyperactivity being correlated with intelligence.

Most children are incorrectly diagnosed with ADHD, because it generates money. Most symptoms of ADHD are also present in varied types of savantism. Most geniuses express distinct symptoms of hyperactivity. Hyperactivity is statistically correlated with intelligence.

I don't know about you, but I'm not letting any parent I know "treat" their hyperactive children with medicaments. They don't have a problem, they're just different. Perhaps it's the rest of the world that can't adapt to them, instead of otherwise. Seriously, I don't see how getting easily bored, being impulsive, being disorganized, being distracted, or answering questions before they are concluded are problems. They're just child behaviour. That's true. Some of the smartest people ever have and did have (if they're dead) ADHD/ADD or Bipolar or Schizophrenia. To name a few, John Nash (schizophrenia), Einstein (Bipolar), Mozart (ADHD almost definitely).

I agree it may be that our society can't adjust to them. So we force them to adjust to our way of living. For example as you said Kromoh, being disorganised is looked down upon in schools etc. But it really doesn't matter a single bloody bit if you're disorganised. What matters is what you think.

It used to shit me no end that I'd get a shitty mark for a maths assignment, or get marked down, because it wasn't fucking presented properly! I mean wtf, I don't give a shit about a front cover and margins and red titles when I'm doing fucking maths!

And it's not that I don't care about aesthetics, I'm doing an art course now, so bullocks to that assumption. It's the fact that I was doing maths. Not art, so I shouldn't have to make a front cover to make it look pretty.

Basically my point is people don't all think the same. But our society tries to make it so. This limits people who really could be considered geniuses.
