You don't slip underneath much with your bolded, profound signature quote.
You don't slip underneath much with your bolded, profound signature quote.
Ha! Yeah. I actually listened to that talk today where he drops that line :D
As it was said here for like thousand times, an avatar is your virtual face on the forum. People associate you with your avatar (more) and signature (less). The name is much less reliable, because they are very similar to each other. Only exception are mods with their colorful, bolded names.
Duuuuuuude, I just realized, dajo has a name! I always associated him with his unique sig and avatar. Spooky.
I didn't know who is dajo, had to look him up
But I did know pretty well who is that german guy sitting on a rock by the river with a celtic like tree avatar.
"A picture is worth a thousand words"
If they don't have an avatar. It just says they A. they want to be discreet or B. they have no personality.
Well, being new to the forum, usually it new people who don't have them (I just haven't thought of a good one to use. I have some others that are forum/ name specific, but haven't thought of anything for this one). I don't take them less seriously, as mentioned already, just slip out of the radar because I equate avs to a person's name
I like avs or a colored sig because I can find my own posts when quickly scrolling through a thread
(ok, I got one, lol)
I just use them as a tool to remember people, it makes it easier. I still read all posts regardless of who wrote them, though.
I also have signatures turned off, because they're generally useless and just make the pages longer. That's also the main reason I don't have a signature, to less inconvenience people with them turned on.
The problems with avatars, though, is that when someone changes it you might not recognize the person anymore. Also, you may mistake someone's identety of they have the same avatar.
On the other hand do people with awesome animated avatars get taken more seriously? I think so.
Ha, this post's made me bother to get an avatar :P
I generally recognise people by their user-name though, I just don't notice the avatar unless I specifically want to see it.
I know I do lol. And look, I have no avi ATM. To me ppl with avies catches my eye more. The ones without kinda just blend into everything else.
EDIT: I no longer blend into everything else lol.
Damn Tami you're still hawt as ever!!
I don't take less seariosly...but avatar usually helps me remember user...
i think if someone has a bad avatar i would take them less seriously, particularly if it is quite childish and unfunny.
Avs don't figure into it too much for me. Some people stick and some people don't, but if I start to get a feel for who you are (or your persona is) in my mind, it's based at least 90% on your posts. If a person has fewer than 20 posts and no av, I may pay less attention on the expectation that they won't stick around, but I'm not sure it's any different if a person has three posts and an uber av.
What I do take less seriously are avs and sigs expressing devotion to a movie, anime, or fashion model / sex symbol. With the exception of members who have proven otherwise with their posts, it just seems like the mark of a shallow person with no personality of their own.
I have avatars off, and I've never found an avatar I liked. I just turned avatars on to see if they told me something about you people I didn't already know, they didn't.
