So I'm thinking about collecting pokemon cards...

but just the ones from the original boosters. A few days ago my nephew got some of the newer cards and I played him with my old school deck. I found out that most of the old ones aren't very good with today's standards but I managed to win. I guess it worn off on me seeing all the new cards and remembering the few times I played in the past. A part of me longs to reconnect with my childhood, that's why I want to start actually collecting the old ones now. A few questions. Do all the original cards have a holographic version? Or is it just the rare ones? And how easy will these be to collect?

No, it was only the rare ones that were holographic. I think I had one or two- I remember some kid in my neighborhood had a Chansey that was shiny, and the rest of us all wanted it. I still have my collection in a bag somewhere. They shouldn't be too hard for you to collect. I'm sure you can get them online very easily, off of sites like ebay. You might have trouble making sure to get the originals, though. Mine are all from like 1997, I don't know anything about the cards that came out after that.

I still have a binder packed full of the originals, and several pages worth of holos in the back. There's a Diglet with a mistake on it too somewhere there. Those were good times, and I still remember the smell of the cards right out of the pack, and that antsy feeling of hoping there'd be a holo. If you can get ahold of some of the unopened oldschool packs, you'd be lucky.

The current active community is terrible, as with most trading card games. Unless you can find a couple people you enjoy playing with, or somehow find a way to make money off it, I would suggest against it. What've you got so far, if I might ask? Do you still have an old collection?

What've you got so far, if I might ask? Do you still have an old collection? Most of them if not all, are from the jungle booster packs. Sadly nothing is really worth noting. I was never much of a collector in the past aside from the few boosters/decks I picked up. It was all yugioh I do have a holographic kangaskhan (comet punch ftw), an unopened Meowth promo from the game boy color trading card game, a syther, and an unopened mew promo that was given away at the pokemon 2000 movie. In my yugioh binder, here are some of my more valuable cards. I still collect these so some aren't very old. i have binders full of pokemon and yugioh cards as well. i have a holo charizard, the jewel of my colection. i think my rarest yugioh card is a japanese holo of the Red Eyes Black Dragon....those were the days.

The only cards I ever collected were TY Beanie Baby cards rofl. We still have a case or more from Gen 1 and above in the attic of my hubby's place. Goodness... those were the days. Hubby still has boxes of unopened first gen. Magic cards. I don't think he ever got into Pokemon though. His son was too old to be interested by then and his daughter was who got him into Beanie Babies.

It's funny when you buy so many booster packs, then once you've bought like 20 of them your proud of the deck you created lol. Now though, isn't it different? I had almost (less than 5 missing) the entire set of the original pokemon, with quite a few rares and some newer. Then was stolen by a friend. We got it back and it was chucked out in it's collector binder some time after that. Our parents spent a fuckload on those for us, maybe more than the full original set would be currently worth.
