Anyway, so check this out. There's a tavern right next to my job, where my friends and I usually go in and have lunch and a couple of beers. It's more or less a little honky-tonk bar, but there are all kinds of people that come in and out. Well, today, it's just my friend and I having lunch, and there are maybe 6 other people in the bar - all white; 2 of which are an older couple who are sitting at the bar right next to our table. My friend is a very attractive, light-skinned, Spanish girl, and we're sitting there sharing a basket of wings and playing darts at the board which is also right next to our table, but on the opposite side of us from the couple.
Well, at one point, I was looking up at one of the tv's and noticed out of the corner of my eye that it seemed like the guy in the couple was looking in our direction. I really paid him no mind, and I wasn't really all that sure he was looking at us at the time, but I figured that, if he was, he might have just been stealing a look at my friend. We're regulars there, and everyone is always real nice and whatnot, though I'd never seen this particular couple before.
So, as we're playing darts - unbeknownst to me - the guy gets up and goes over to the jukebox. (I didn't see him do it, but my friend saw him and told me later). A country song comes on, which is nothing new, and I wasn't even really listening because I was teaching my friend how to play Cricket. So, about halfway through the song, I actually started noticing the lyrics.
This is the song that was playing:
It's called "Nigger Fucker", by David Allan Coe.
I just laughed and we continued playing our game. I hadn't seen who turned the song on, and I wasn't about to start any shit because of some ignorant shit who wanted to get under our skin. It was funny to me, and my friend just kind of rolled her eyes. When we had to go back to work, and walked outside, she told me that it was fucked up that someone would play that - for us, obviously. She was a lot more pissed than I thought she was. I told her that it was pretty fucked up, and asked her if she saw who played it. She said it was the guy in the couple, and that while we were playing, she noticed them both staring at us and laughing to themselves. She had thought about saying something, herself, but decided not to (and I'm glad she didn't, because she is a kickboxer with one Hell of a temper). I told her that it's best that we didn't (the last thing I need is the cops showing up to the bar outside my job, because we kicked some old couple's asses) and that I just don't even have time to let myself get caught up in that kind of bullshit. If I got that riled up everytime someone did something like that toward me, I'd either be dead or in jail by now.
I did check the song out, when I came home, and I know that it was written "as satire", according to the artist, who had a black drummer in his band at the time - and has since been a very vocal proponent of anti-racism and in open opposition to groups like the KKK - but the manner in which it was played "for us" was anything but satire.
All I can say is that that guy's lucky I'm not so easily baited, and that my friend decided to leave it alone as well. Part of me almost wishes he would have said whatever he had to say, to us, instead of having the song speak for him. It's best for everyone that they didn't though, and that we were both able to chalk it up to their ignorance.
Ugh. Some people.
