Can someone link me to this "policy" or whatever it is? I keep seeing people talking about it, but I must have missed it. So people aren't supposed to make "I'm leaving" threads or something? Why?

Poog made several duplicate accounts in a deliberate attempt to get banned. His goodbye thread was a moot point.

Kichu, I wish that I had some more concrete answers for you beyond "it's a precedent." (Maybe another staff member does, but I don't.) I've started a discussion in the administrative forums about goodbye/leaving threads, so hopefully we will have more to say soon.

It's not a formal 'policy', as such. It is something that Wavefunction and I said (some time ago, perhaps August of last year) we would implement if these threads continued, at the time somewhat jokingly. They did continue, but we didn't really implement it until very recently in a serious manner. I believe the first actual ban as a direct result of a Leaving thread was that of Dreamhope11, which was done by me. If anyone feels this was unprecedented, please direct them to me.

We are not planning on banning everyone that makes a thread saying they're going on an extended vacation; just the obnoxious ones that say they're leaving DV for good for this-or-that reason, trying to get attention or be annoying. A permanent ban isn't even required; if they're just joking around trying to start a fad, then a two-week ban may be handed to them.

In short, this is, I feel, a warranted policy, however informal. The point is that "I Am Leaving DV Forever" threads are unwelcome if posted for any reason other than simply letting friends know that they will need to use other means of contacting you. Even in that case, the member would be better served by PMing their friends here.

I could probably have put this a bit better, and may edit this post once I get home—I'm short on time right now.
